We were lucky to catch up with Marcus Carr recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marcus, thanks for joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
So before I was a DJ, I was a part-time cell phone salesman for AT&T. Even though I was part-time I would have as many sales and made as much as most full-time reps. I learned several lessons from the company, but the most important one was going above and beyond for my customers. Whether it was setting up a device, transferring data, or enlarging the display for my older customers, I made sure that they remembered the experience that they had with me. I believe AT&T calls it “lagniappe” and that little extra transferred over into my own business. I make sure that every client I work with has a memorable experience.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Marcus “Kujho” Carr. I’m a DJ, graphic designer, a husband, father, and son. Before DJing found me I would make mixes and burn CDs for classmates. I began DJing from a Micheal Jackson mix that my mentor DJ Sweat played during a college club night the day he passed. 14 years later here we are. Since then, I’ve traveled across the country Djing weddings, night clubs and for corporations like Home Depot, Wal-Mart, BET, Avon & Essence.
With graphic design I always had a passion for art. I would always be drawing something and once my mom and dad got me a computer, I would make different things in a program called Word Art. Fast forward to college days, I would help throw an event but we didn’t have the resources to pay for flyers or design so I taught myself photoshop. Since then I have started the company Studio54 Multimedia. We specialize in design, print, photography, videography, drone work, social media branding and marketing.
With all of my clients I try to make sure I’m the easiest part of their event. They tell me the vibe they are trying to set and I make sure to give them exceptional service to make sure the guest along with them have a memorable experience. I’m most proud of the work I do with my hometown, Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Our New Year’s Eve celebration and the annual Daddy Daughter Dance I help sponsor with the ladies Zeta Phi Beta are my favorite times of the year.
With Graphic Design our motto is “Your Design, Your Way.” We take pride in knowing that our clients leave satisfied with the work we’ve accomplished.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think the thing that helped build my reputation the most is my work ethic. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty and I also believe in teamwork to make sure a clients vision is realized. It’s my belief that what you put out is in direct proportion to what you get back so I make sure to give the best service I can.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In 2014 I had a string of issues with my business; from my equipment being stolen to healing from depression. The one event that stands out is my truck catching fire. It was the first vehicle I bought on my own, an Excursion we called “Big Shirley.” One night while I was DJing, it caught on fire outside the club due to a faulty ignition. The club owner called the Hattiesburg Fire Department and we all gathered outside away from the building. Once HFD extinguished the fire, I gathered all my things from the back of Big Shirley and told everyone let go back inside. I went back in the DJ booth and we partied like there was no tomorrow. In my career, the faith my mom instilled in me is something I’ve always leaned on and I knew that I’d be taken care of. The funny thing is I got a letter in the mail two days later telling me to bring it in.
