We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcus Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcus below.
Hi Marcus , thanks for joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I am a very happy business owner! I honestly don’t think about a “regular” job often. What is regular? haha. I’m a hard worker so anything I’ve ever done I gave my best. Being creative, it’s hard to sit still in a regular job, there’s so many things that can inspire a project, a song, a thought, and I don’t want to have to wait till the shift is over to explore that. Now respectfully, I’ll always jump into whatever is necessary to provide, but that’s why I give my business so much energy. Building relationships is key and I do that with intention with my clients and customers so they want to come back and bring someone else to experience what Deco has to offer.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Okay so I got started with a fish store, so 4 years ago I decided to venture off into exotic fish and what happened was for some of the filtration I would use everyday common houseplants like pothos, peace lily’s, and things like that; and then I got into the more rare, uncommon plants as time went on. But the Deco came from my partner, we were coming up with different ideas for the business when I told her I wanted to start a plant business. I’m such creative and I love it, I feel like I’m open minded to other creative ideas and I decided to venture off into art, I’d often mix art with plants, I decided to merge the two as it felt more bespoke and that’s pretty much how Plant Deco was born.
Plant Deco is a bespoke plant company, our curated collection of plants thrives in hydroponic and semi-hydroponic systems, ensuring optimal growth and health. Whether you’re a seasoned plant enthusiast or just beginning your green journey, our expert team is here to provide personalized guidance and support. We also have some plant care products, artwork, and also do interior design.
The biggest problem we solve for our clients is cultivating or enhancing the aesthetic in whatever space they desire us to work in. Whether it’s a single plant or an entire room!
I think the thing that sets me apart from others is my creativity. I do what feels right! Whether I’m inspired to create something specific or just have the freedom to freestyle. At times it maybe kinda crazy but it works, especially for me, so I feel like it sets me apart because it lets me be who I am. And in the space that a lot of people are not really doing that.
I think the thing I’m most proud of is my dedication and how adamant I am about knowledge! I’m proud of myself for that because that’s an easy thing for people to just blow off, like whatever. I research and read more, so I’m proud of myself being present enough to understand that if I need to be able to do this in order for me to succeed, then I’m going to do that.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Being myself! Everything I’ve done has been organic. I’ve been in the creative space for a long time and Deco was not the beginning for me, so some of my following was cultivated from previous ventures, but based in who I genuinely am. I don’t try to show up like anybody but me, and social media has been no different. What you see is what you get and my audience has continued to grow with me as I’ve grown through all the creative phases of my life and career.
My advice would be to be yourself! Anybody can go buy a following or pay for likes, but it means a lot more when it’s actually the people who believe in your brand and what you’re giving to the world. You can build and interact with real people, and if that’s takes longer, so be it.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Life.
