We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marcus Black a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marcus, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning proper radio etiquette and production was truly a learn on the job experience, and it continues to be. I am fortunate to access to resources and support for direction and guidance. As far as speeding up my learning process, a formal education on radio production would have been extremely helpful, and is still an option for consideration. The most essential skills I was fortunate to bring with me to the experience, the strongest of which being my love and knowledge for the music that I am fortunate to share with my listeners. The only obstacle I’ve faces is not enough hours in the day!

Marcus, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began hosting hip hop events as a third of the PAID IN FULL crew, and branched out to hosting shows, concerts and music festivals. I was invited to function as the lead microphone on a podcast for The Sphere Podcast Network. During this time, after a guest appearance on QUANTUM LEAP Radio, I was offered an opportunity to produce my own radio broadcast, and THE REMEDY was created in June 2017. I have the pleasure of curating the best of neo-soul, independent soul, rhythm & blues and rare grooves over the Houston airwaves and beyond. I am supremely proud of the artists that I’ve introduced to the audience, as well as the interviews conducted with a variety of creative minds and spirits.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’d built a social media presence amongst like minded souls and music lovers beginning in 2004, I made sure to remain present in the midst of the changes with social media from message boards, to meeting apps, to photo & music sharing sites. I was fortunate to be part of the first wave of the social media influence on society and popular culture, and was able to use the reputable and consistent name of MistaGoodBar to allow my brand to enter rooms where I could physically not be present. What I do currently is what I’ve always done with the tools available to me, thus the venture to radio broadcasting was not a departure from what I’ve always been known for. By remaining grounding, positive, open minded and available for opportunities, I was able to cultivate the relationships I’ve established and use the work ethic that has kept me active in the Houston music community to gather music lovers locally and abroad to consistently listen to THE REMEDY every Saturday for the last 5 years, and streaming the show on a variety of streaming services.

: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely. My goal is to be the change that I would like to see in terrestrial radio broadcasting. To recreate the radio experience that helped grow my love of music, while elevating the experience to meet and exceed the needs for today’s listener, as well as tomorrow’s creators. I want to be the source listeners can rely on for fresh, new sounds and amazing classic soul.
