We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcus Bell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcus below.
Hi Marcus, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned to improve my singing and produce music by learning from other artist’s in the industry that have accomplished a great deal in their own careers. Knowing what I know now, I wished I could have started learning early on in my 20’s and to get out of my own head thinking that I knew what I was doing. My most essential skills that helped me be to where I am right now is my vocal range and my musicality. One of the most important obstacles that stood in my way was my own self, not seeking out help and knowledge when I needed it.

Marcus, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Marcus Bell, I am a singer, writer, and producer in the Houston Tx, area. I always had a love for music at a young age, and what made me explore more in to this field was being related to Berry White in my family tree. Seeing his accomplishments and many talents that he had, made me want to pursue in his footsteps and find my own voice. What sets me apart, like many others. Nobody has heard my story or my voice. I don’t just create a song just because that is what everybody is doing. I write and create from the heart and what inspires me. I want to be able for people to feel what I’m trying to say either by understanding the lyrics or the way the music makes you feel. I am proud of knowing who I am and that I don’t let others dictate what I will become and how my music will sound.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One of my particular goals is to bring back the creative process of making music and writing lyrics and having fun with it. Instead of just manufacturing beats that everybody does or expecting. Where everybody is making the music for you and you are just the voice, there is no meaning to the song or emotion to it. I want it to be where you randomly hear a noise and it inspires you to create a certain beat or melody. You see a particular word or phrase and it blooms into a beautiful song. My mission is that by the time it is my end, and I go to the grave empty handed. I know that I gave it my all with no regrets.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
What society can do to support artists and creatives is to not judge so hard. To let people grow in to their creativity and not subjugate them into what they should or should not do. Not everything is meant for everybody, they only need 1 person to truly believe their work and to flourish from there. If we are able to change now how things are being implemented and be able to have an open space for creativity then I think the next generation will have a better outcome and not be suppressed by peers.
