Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marcos Salinas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marcos , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I would consider my parents to be My Mom & My grandpa. I come from an immigrant family, so there were a lot of things that were done right in the aspect of working hard, being resilient, and working smarter when possible, with the circumstances. Growing up, my mom allowed me to be independent (Cautiously) by learning the consequences of my actions when I was stubborn to explore things, and provided continued support and belief in whatever I decided to focus on. My grandpa was extremely hard-working and I saw him become an entrepreneur in his respective passion. He instilled a lot of resilience and optimism in me. One of the most impactful statements he shared with me would be, “I worked out in the fields, so you guys (younger family) wouldn’t have to.” I carry those words as encouragement to continue pushing forward and creating the life I want.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, I’m Marcos Salinas, LPC; You can call me “Sal.” Being a Counselor is invigorating. I love helping people become healthier and more empowered and watching their lives flourish. The most rewarding thing about being a Counselor is giving hope when people feel hopeless. I am committed to supporting my client help transform their life. I provide care for those experiencing excessive amounts of worry, emotions that feel out of control and feeling hopeless in life. For me, therapy has provided a lot of difficult realizations but it is also provided a safe space to process and heal from those experiences. I know the feelings of hesitation about what we may discover or of the journey during this process. However, through the same safe and supportive therapeutic relationship I experienced through my journey, we will work together to create change in situations that are in our control. It’s important for me to create safety within the session and stay open to any feedback and questions you may have. There isn’t a “one size fits all” approach to Therapy. Our sessions will fit your specific needs and concerns. I am most proud of my ability to make almost anyone feel at ease. People tell me that they can let their guard down around me.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
One of the biggest influences on impacting my thinking and philosophy, is Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu (Podcast). I admire and appreciate him for being authentic and vulnerable on the issues he struggles with personally and in his business which seems to help manage his team and himself better. I also follow a lot of work from Simon Sinek and Adam Grant. Simon Sinek really helped me understand my purpose and to continue to focus on that even when there are discouraging moments. Adam Grant has impacted my understanding of how one can create a great environment for themselves and other to develop, and too not be so attached to an idea or an expectation that you aren’t able to rethink a situation or a conflict.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
There are a few things that are helpful in my field is being patient with the people you work with and understanding when you won’t be unable to help them on their journey and maybe a different approach or structure would meet their current needs. Also, understanding that we are not a therapist/counselor all the time and having self-compassion with ourselves and making sure we take care of ourselves.
