We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marcos Moran a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marcos, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
We get new boats every 3-4 months, new equipment every year, and we pay our employees really well. Non of those 3 are common in our industry. We spend a ton of money to make sure we always have good quality equipment and good quality staff.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started waterskiing when I was 8 years old and then I started wakeboarding when I was 12 back in 1994 and I just fell in love with it. I ran a school when I was in college and then I had the opportunity to open my own school in 2006, Gator Bait Wakeboard & Wakesurf School Of Miami LLC. We give wakeboard and wakesurf lessons to all ages and skill levels.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started working when I was 15 and I was so careful with my money. I never spent too much and I just saved every penny. I lived at home until I was 27 and that helped me same enough money to buy my first boat. And now I have 3 $325,000 MasterCraft X24s!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
HARD WORK! I work my butt of because I do what I love. I always answer the phone and I always call everyone back and that has been huge for the growth of my business. So many customers tell me how impressed they are with how easy it is to just pick up the phone and call or text to book a session with us.
