Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marcos Morales. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Marcos, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I feel like my artistic career started at the right time. I began writing initial song ideas in late 2019, just a few months before lockdown. I was working in retail and decided to go into freelance work in audiovisual production instead. Had I began at that time, I would’ve been too busy to write and perform consistently. When I started the band, I just quit my job mixing for weddings and corporate events. I enjoyed being able to travel while making a sustainable living, but found it creatively unfulfilling and keeping me from pursuing my own endeavors. Things were starting to fall into place now as I had a renewed desire to play my music to bring the creative vision to life. Had I began sooner, any momentum would’ve been idle for that first year in AV. The only thing I would change in my experience would be building more community throughout the local music scene.

Marcos, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My creative journey began as a self taught musician in my early teens. Culminating to the concept of world building through my music. Soon after I went to Mediatech to study audio engineering. Since then, I have had the privilege to work in live sound, location mixing, foley art, post production, and broadcast mixing.
I initially planned to open a recording studio and build a list of clients to work with. But to my surprise, it was live sound that became my primary source of income upon graduating. Shortly after, I began teaching music lessons in between gigs as an additional source of income and further developing my skills as a musician.
Having a career in these various fields has expanded my view of what is possible creatively. From working with directors and various musicians, it has given me a clearer vision to approach work in a more diligent and disciplined manner. To show up everyday and put in the work. Not waiting to be inspired, but to actively work to nurture that creative sensibility. To be willing to try new ideas and find what’s authentic to you. In a culture where things tend come off as overly polished, I enjoy to retain authenticity in my art. One of the most rewarding parts of also being producer/songwriter for Cloudvase has been trying different mixing methods to develop and refine the bands sound. Thinking of ways to push the envelope in my music and bring something that feels familiar yet renewed.
I am very fortunate for the people I have had the opportunity to work with and strive to continually grow and improve my skills as a professional. There have been many milestones in my career, but being able to say I have worked with prominent figures I respect in the industry while building a name for myself has been one of my proudest achievements.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The healing qualities of writing, planting down an idea when thoughts can be difficult to convey. To become vulnerable with myself and bring about growth while bringing people together in our shared experiences.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Imposter syndrome definitely comes to mind, that feeling of being behind and unsure where (or how) to start. That there’s people more qualified or better at your craft. This notion that you aren’t good enough, a struggle many creatives face until we come to the realization that there’s no shortcut to success and we must strive to better ourselves to achieve greatness through our own terms.
