We caught up with the brilliant and insightful MARCIA WARREN a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
MARCIA , appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I have taken big risk in my life. It is hard to tell which one was more risking . But most recent one was leaving my 9 to 5 job and start living from my photography business. I was stressed and scared but now I see it has been the best decision of my life.
MARCIA , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I m a Brazilian photographer based in Atlanta. My husband (@shanfotografia) is also a photographer and He really invested on me so I could be here right now. He always wanted to make photography a family business. In the beginning I thought I did have enough discipline to be my own boss. I was completely wrong about my self. Doing photography showed one side of me that I did not know. I can be very creative and I m an extremely disciplined person. I am most focus on portraits, I love to do editorial and beauty, and I most proud of the services I provide for ballet/dance schools. I remember telling Shan I would only do photography if he helps me to shoot ballerinas. Since than I could not stop anymore.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I came to the USA as an exchange student (AU PAIR) and I used to live with an American Family, my husband is the oldest (34) kid of this family. I traveled to Jamaica for his family reunion and we met in person ,since that we could not stop talking to each other. A few months pass I asked him to date me. Now here we are, married and with our business.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Photography was my side hustle how people would say, but I started getting lot of inquiries and I was taking pictures on my days off. Some days I shot for long hours somedays just one session. I was frustrated with my full time job, felling overwhelmed and underpaid. The was a point I could not handle some many hours of working, going to my studio, editing and I had to take the risk, I put my 2 weeks notice and decide to live from photography.
