Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Márcia Sequeira. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Márcia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I’m a fashion designer and for me fashion is like a form of expression. With my brand, I bring issues that society constantly prefers to leave in the dark. I make small and short collections to provide exclusivity to my audience. However, it is extremely difficult to make my business my main income, at the moment I still have to maintain a part-time job to cover my expenses, especially now that I am a mother. One of my biggest dreams is to be financially independent with just Freezin’Hot.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Since I was little, I had the desire to do something that could express myself as a black woman. I try to do this with my art, be it pieces of clothing or paintings. Freezin’Hot is about rebranding streetwear in Portugal. It’s about not remaining closed in the box that society puts us in. I cover topics such as black excellence, purpose and the question of each person putting themselves in a position of greatness and being better than they can in this world. It’s about addressing issues that others prefer to leave in the dark. It is possible to find conscious fashion clothing and accessories. Here exclusivity is imperative, the pieces are unique and knowing that the person who buys my piece will not find anyone else with one like it makes me very happy and fulfilled. . You can find bags, tote bags, bucket hats, graphic t-shirts, tracksuit sets and even some acrylic paint paintings. All of this is done by hand and with great care.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I started my business during the covid-19 pandemic in 2020. And my biggest lesson was realizing that people we don’t know are going to be our biggest supporters. They are not friends, contrary to what we might think at the beginning. And the faster I learned this, the faster I let go of the idea of friends buying my pieces so I could be successful.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
My top 3 books are: The Secret, Rich Dad Poor Dad and The Power of Now. These 3 books that I think all entrepreneurs must have read completely changed my view of things, mindset and also changed the way I thought I could achieve success.
