We were lucky to catch up with Marcia Armstrong recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Marcia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
When I got laid off in December 2022, I made the decision not to accept offers to work at another subsidiary of the bank. I wanted to explore entrepreneurship full-time although I did not see the full path that was ahead of me or knew what I would encounter on my journey.
What guided my decision was the feeling I felt in my last year of employment. Although I worked for a well-renowned organization, at times I did not feel challenged at my job and it felt like I was settling. I didn’t want to be someone who allowed their salary to be the main motivating factor to stay at a job. Personally and professionally I yearned for more and knew that my current career path had limited upward mobility.
Many people in my position wouldn’t leave sure income for fluctuating income but I knew that with entrepreneurship even during times of trials my income was not capped. I could make the impact I want by doing what I love.
I dubbed my first year of business as my learning year, the second year of business as my refining year, and now in my third year, it has been called my blockbuster year.
Looking back, it was a risk worth taking. You can only know what is inside of you when you encounter circumstances that stretch you.
Marcia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Marcia N. Armstrong, Personal Finance Strategist & Consultant for millennial corporate professionals and entrepreneurs. I am the creative Founder and CEO of A Purpose Life, a coaching and consulting firm based in Barbados with a global reach.
My company’s mission is to redefine wealth so that it empowers and equips change agents to create a life of design that positively impacts their household, community, society, and the world. My vision is to become one of the world’s largest HUBs for wealth creation and innovation.
I specialize in helping millennial corporate professionals and entrepreneurs master their finances so they develop a roadmap that leads to wealth creation and financial independence.
My business was birthed through a personal breakthrough in my finances that caused me to repay a 4-year loan in 12 months! There was an innate desire to show others how they can also heal their money relationship using biblical principles.
My main service offering is my personal finance course, The Wealthy Millennial Society which is an 8-week LIVE group coaching program that will ultimately become self-paced in the near future. Students who enroll are given lifetime access to the course curriculum, private Facebook Students-only community, and direct access to me.
Other services I provide are 1:1 financial consultations, as well as financial wellness workshops for corporates in the private and governmental sectors, schools, NGOs, and charities.
My superpower is taking complex personal finance topics and simplifying them into bite-sized pieces so that the non-financial person can understand financial terms, concepts, and systems that govern money so that they are empowered to make sound financial decisions with confidence.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
I always say that entrepreneurship is like Personal Development 101 because it shows you what you’re made of. Last year November I made an investment that would take me to another level in my business. At the time I was recovering from surgery and had to say no to many opportunities. Therefore, heading into December I did not know how my bills would be paid.
With any investment, your money script rises up and tells you all the reasons why you shouldn’t do it. However, as I looked at my computer screen with my card details inputted, I took my index finger and clicked the button. As the screen loaded and the message “you’re in” popped up, there was no turning back.
That month, every bill that my money script told me wouldn’t be paid was paid IN FULL because God created opportunities. The investment I made in November more than paid back for itself times over.
These are the stories people don’t share publicly but my hope is that my transparency helps someone even if it’s one reader. As my mentor, Lamar Tyler says, “scared money don’t make no money”.
You will always be your best investment and to be the best you have to invest in resources that stretch your thinking. As a personal finance strategist, please know that you will encounter risks you feel hesitant about or the risk you take does not make sense to others but don’t be afraid to jump.
I rather leap and learn than stay and be stagnant.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Consistency, Consistency, Consistency
I made a personal commitment to keep taking up space in my industry and to show up with intention. This strategy has worked well for me and for 2022 I had 168,000 impressions on LinkedIn.
Sharing my story on local and international publications have collectively created job opportunities, collaborations, partnerships as well as built credibility and authority in my industry.
Moreover, helping hundreds of persons with their personal finances over the years, word of mouth and referrals have helped greatly. Past and current clients are eager to share their transformation openly without fear which encourages others to step forward and ask for help with their finances.
