We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marci Lundy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marci, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Growing up, I always thought outside of the box, which at that time I didn’t immediately identify as artist or creative type, but I certainly knew writing, photography, and happiness were the things that set my heart to racing.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
In the fall of 2012, after a move to the beautiful state of Colorado, I found that my skin was experiencing excessive dryness, and after doing research and test driving products with friends and family, I started my organic skincare line, 303 Face Body.
Photography plays a tremendous role in my life. I was first introduced to it by my dad at age 7 with a Kodak 110 camera. I am not only the photographer for all 303 Face Body products, marketing, etc, I integrate photography into all of my ventures.
My love of writing developed in jr high, as writing poetry and short stories ruled my mind. As I got into my twenties, I wrote less, but the passion never went away. Current day, I channel that love of writing into my social media and marketing, while also writing my first book. I’ve lived a lot of pretty awesome lives in one.
I’m very much an introvert, but also enjoy bonding.. I can’t explain that.. :)
Around 2017, I bought podcasting equipment on a mission to get into the podcast game. The market is quite saturated, and it wasn’t until the fall of 2020 that the idea of what I wanted my podcast to be finally developed; I wanted to talk about kindness.
As a woman of color, and a true believer in kindness, I really wanted to step into this role of kindness advocate. In January 2019, I created Kindness Rocks and the City, where I leave decorated rocks with words of kindness throughout the city. As this was already an act of kindness that was near and dear to my heart, it was kismet to marry the Kult of Kindness Podcast into this movement that I created, which is to pay it forward, in love.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I don’t think non creatives understand, or always take seriously, the journey of a creative. They’re very ‘by the book.’
Creatives see their experiences in life as “the book,” and they both build and develop from that.
The starving artist is motivated by the world. It’s out canvas, it’s an ongoing movie that we’re not only watching, but are a part of; contributing via music, poetry, design, horticulture.. all the things… all the things the non creatives do when they are done with their 9 to 5, on their weekends, on their vacations… that is the time the non creatives more often than not enjoy a number of things that are created by, you guessed it: Creatives.
It’s beautiful actually, when you think about it. It’s how we are all able to make the world go ‘round.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that being an artist doesn’t get you anywhere.
It was never a thing that was directly said to me, it was always indirect, like, “Oh that’s cute that you do that,” or “Is it like a hobby for you?”
Ummm… NO. It’s my passion, which is also my career.
I was recently talking with my parents on two separate occasions, and expressed how in this day and age, successfully being an artist is quite a bit easier, as we have a number of tools (social media being a big one) to help us get out there and show, sell, create… introduce the world.. to us.
