We were lucky to catch up with Marci Delaney recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marci, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
Hmmmm…..I had no idea where my path would lead when I retired from a 20+ year career in the corporate world – certainly starting my own business was not on my radar. I wasn’t “wired” to just stay at home or be the volunteer go-to person in my community. Through a few twists and turns I ended helping my Ophthalmologist friend open her own practice and was having a lot of fun. The doctor provided botox injectables and other “close to the eye” skincare treatments and thought bringing an Aesthetician in to the practice would be a good idea. After interviewing several people that were not a good match, I said that I would go to school and come back there to work for her – at 53 years old. After getting into school to provide skin care, I fell totally head over heels in love with the job. I told my friend that I was not coming back to work with her, but opening my own practice.
That was nearly 13 years ago and I am still loving what I do. I now have a 3200 sq foot wellness spa and employ 4 massage therapists, 3 Aestheticians, and a Nurse Practitioner.
Would I have done anything differently? Yes. The old adage, “If I knew then what I know now,” rings very true for me. I would have loved to have been able to have a longer career. I say to find what you love to do and do it!

Marci, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I feel in love with this business, totally by accident.. I am proud of the direction we have grown and continue to grow. It was never in my sight to become and expert in skin care and certainly would have never imagined to have this glorious staff that I get to mentor every day.
I have created a lovely private label skin care line that I am very proud of. It is so rewarding to have your guests tell you how much they love your products and refer their friends to you and your team. My line is called, Remedy Rx. It is a medical grade line that offers a deeper penetration of ingredients to effect a true change in the skin.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back I would absolutely start this amazing career much much earlier. Having said that, my previous corporate life better prepared me to be a successful leader/boss and company owner. The knowledge gained has been invaluable.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your firm or practice?
Well . . . I started my business during the last recession using my 401k that was steadily loosing value. I took that money and invested in myself! I haven’t regretted that decision one bit even though my accountant warned me against doing that.
