Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marcelo Bukin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marcelo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Throughout my career, I’ve taken many risks and continue to do so. I believe life is more interesting when we occasionally explore beyond our comfort zone. As a filmmaker and visual artist, I plan ‘calculated’ risks in most of my creative projects. It’s a way of allowing the unpredictable juices of life to join my creativity.
When I was 19 years old, I took a sabbatical backpacking across Europe and the Middle East, and I chose not to return to my home country, Argentina—and my mom almost had a heart attack! My plan was to go to film school, but I decided to keep on backpacking alone across Africa, then Southeast Asia, and Japan, where I lived for one year. I mixed it with spiritual trips to India. I was so young and innocent! So many encounters, so many dangers, so many dark nights in tiny remote villages… I was voraciously hungry for life adventures, and I had them. I can’t imagine who I would be now if I had stayed in my country and community without those four years of world explorations, which helped me discover my strength, potential, the power of making ideas happen, and most importantly, that we are all much more alike than different in this world. Many times I didn’t speak the language of the local people, yet I was invited to spend entire nights with families and made tons of friends by communicating through eye contact and hand signals. Life is a beautiful dream. Of course, it can be a very harsh place as well. I am not so naïve now.
Those wild experiences taught me to embrace the unknown, mostly with a plan but always open to the unexpected. I believe life will show you its treasures when you jump into wild adventures.
Don’t get me wrong, people that work with me know how obsessed I am with planning my film shoots and projects in extreme detail. Does this sound contradictory? Absolutely not. Inside those plans, I also “plan” time for total experimentation and improvisation, inspired by the fruits of what real risks taught me.
Marcelo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a filmmaker and visual artist in love with making films, commercials, photography, and art. I work with forward-thinking brands, creating advertising and content while expanding my impressionist fine art brand, BUKIN. My aim is to create emotion-driven narratives that blend vibrant imagery with humanity to connect and inspire audiences.
Recent highlights include directing creative film campaigns for brands like Unilever’s Knorr and launching Mexico’s Farmacias del Ahorro in the US via TV commercials. In both projects, we had detailed plans and wording, yet I embraced many playful moments and improvisation with our talent, actors, and non-actors, bringing a fresh, organic feeling to all films.
With the debut of BUKIN during Miami Art Week, I’ve collaborated with interior designers, architects, and developers, integrating my passion for art and design into my work for truly enjoyable collaborations.
I love treating each project as a blank canvas, connecting with the unique DNA of each endeavor. Beyond TV commercials, I ride the “new wave” of brand storytelling, where instead of hard-selling, I help brands engage audiences with entertaining stories—emotional, adventurous, or edgy, yet always genuine.
Currently, I’m also developing two fiction films with wonderful creative partners and working hard on my fine art, crafting new paintings and photography artworks constantly.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes! Do you know Simon Sinek’s book “Start with Why”? I love it, and it helped me narrow my mission, which is “to inspire people to live happier and with purpose – embracing joy, beauty, strength, and meaning in life.”
Through my art, I always try to live up to my mission and invite my collaborators to together define a mission for each project so it will have solid foundations.
The biggest questions in life will remain unanswered, yet we can define our own contribution to our communal human experience on this beautiful planet and deeply believe we all have inner riches to share. I focus on “art that entertains, inspires, and heals,” aiming to encourage introspection, foster inspiration, and ultimately help raise consciousness while embracing the celebration of being alive.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being an artist is a tremendous pleasure, privilege, and responsibility. We are nurturing people’s spirits and desires to dream, to feel alive, to keep being playful or emotional despite sometimes discouraging life experiences we all face. Our human existence is a mystery, and I believe art is the door where we can connect with ourselves and feel that we belong – and personally, I have tremendous fun and feel totally alive when creating.
