We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcellus Cox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcellus below.
Hi Marcellus , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Right off the back with this one haha. I knew around 10-11 years old, watching movies and really starting to understand the important magnitude of storytelling and the impact that it could have on people. It was a real eye awakening moment and feeling that I still can’t fully describe.
I never take this love and passion for Filmmaking for granted. That’s why everything I make and want to in the future is so personal, being true to myself as a Artist is a priority and I feel I let that be seen with every single thing that I do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I hate talking about myself, it gets on my nerves so much I swear 😂 but I’ll give it a shot.
My name is Marcellus Ja’vonnie Cox II. I was born December 14th 1987 in Lynwood, California and grew up my whole life in South Central Los Angeles. As a Award-Winning Filmmaker/Auteur my style of cinematic storytelling embossed with dark and edgy themes that is engaging and enlightening, delivering the audience to a place of understanding and compassion for social issues and objectivity, Pushing the boundaries of controversial storytelling, touching on subjects such as Race, Religion, Social & Political issues.
My work has screened in over 200 International Film Festivals, Won over 150 International Film Awards and has screened Nationwide on SHORTS TV, Revolt TV, Crime & Investigation, Link TV & PBS.
The thing I’m most proud of is the fact that I have the privilege to bring stories to life and create something that has meaning and purpose. There’s no greater feeling in the world and something that I will cherish for as long as I live.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
There’s a few of them lol but if I had to pick one it’s working with amazing talented Actors, Actresses and Crew Members that believes in your vision and story and want to bring it to life. There giving you there undivided attention because they see something special in the work and in you. I can never express my love and gratitude to all of the cast and crew that has ever came on board anything I’ve ever done. It takes a village in this profession, I’ll never give myself all the credit.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Making films that has something to say… Doesn’t matter the subject it just has to have purpose, a justifiable reason for it to exist. I’m not interested in blockbuster, big budget sequels or star driven films about nothing. I want to create stories that will be impactful artistically 50,100 years from now when I’m long gone from this earth 🌍. Something that shows you exactly who I am as a human being. It’s my driving force every single time I sit down at my desk, writing that next story and will do so forever.
