We were lucky to catch up with Marcéllin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marcéllin, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Well, I’ve been in music since I could form full sentences. I started really singing when I was four. By time I was 7, I was doing full length musical productions. I haven’t really cultivated anything in my life and taken as far as I have music. I can’t imagine my life without music or my voice in some form, whether that be full time artistry, or writing and producing songs on the side. Professionally, when I graduated high school, I wrote and recorded my first song called “Missin in Action”. It turned out absolutely terrible but it was the start of something new that I’ve never done before, which was make music and release it. The rest is history.
Marcéllin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Marcellin was born from a kid who knew how to do nothing else but sing. From there, I vocally trained for years. Once I was 14, I attended Baltimore School for the Arts, where I classically trained in music and in opera. I took those foundations and applied them to my music career. I’m now a singer, songwriter, and I also vocal produce and arrange other’s music as well as my own. I’m most proud of how much I’ve learned and how much I’ve grown since I’ve started. Seeing it in real time is pleasant. I strive to be as unique and innovative in my music as I can. I don’t want to be the next “so and so”, I want to be the first Marcéllin. One thing I feel that separates me right now, is my style of background vocals and layering. It’s one of my fa route parts about music and about making music, so I pay a lot of attention to this.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Oh there are plenty. I was lost as hell when I first started making music. What people don’t realize a lot of the time is being a talented vocalist is not interchangeable with being a great recording artist; two different, yet adjacent, worlds. I wish I knew about the world of the music industry as a resource sooner then I started pursuing making music. Collaboration is something that wasn’t really a big thing in my musical past, that’s a resource that til this day, I haven’t taken advantage of. The fact that I have access to collaboration with great artists is very efficient as well.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn (and this goes for everyone else too) to STOP comparing yourself to others in your field or in your space. It doesn’t do anything but hurt yourself. I had to learn how to recognize that Marcellin’s path is Marcellin’s path and his only. I believe what is healthily for you will not be for anyone else, and what is for you has happened for a reason. I’m still learning that to be honest. It’s a work in progress.
