We recently connected with Marcelle Timonen and have shared our conversation below.
Marcelle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Both Kate and I were laid off from the design firm we were employed at the onset of Covid. It came as a huge shock and we went through many emotions as there were so many unknowns. I began doing some solo design work and asked Kate to assist. It went well and we made a great team so we decided to team up.
I had the name in my head for some time prior to teaming up. Originally it was House of Rowe. Rowe came to me and when I looked up the meaning it said “woman who perseveres in the face of adversity”. Perfect! That is our story! We are determined to stay positive and continue to let our passion guide us.
‘Rowe
Rowe is sometimes defined as a beautiful, gorgeous energetic woman who doesn’t need help with anything. She seems to have everything under control even when things don’t go her way. She still raises her head up high like the queen she is.
Why can’t everyone be like Rowe?’
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Marcelle- I have been in the design industry for over a decade working for some of the top design firms in Minnesota. Kate- has also been in the industry for over a decade. She worked for a while in the commercial space and eventually changed to residential also working for one of the leading design firms.
We eventually landed at the same firm.
We are a full service design firm. We offer space planning (Kate is CID certified), material selection for new construction and remodels, lighting design, furnishings (we have access to many designer exclusive lines and are able to offer fully custom furniture to clients), art and styling.
We pride ourselves on thoughtful design, carefully dissecting each floor plan and revising to ensure it’s not only beautiful but also functional. We have received feedback from architects we work closely with and they appreciate our insight.
We are also know for balanced design, and playfully mix both light and dark elements, creating interest and allowing the eye to be entertained.
Lastly, we honor our clients personal tastes and style. There is a psychological aspect to design, it evokes feeling. Home is a feeling. We want our clients to feel enveloped in home. That is what drives our passion.
Kate is the analytical one, she does all the space planning and floor planning. She makes sure no detail is overlooked.
Marcelle is the artist, bringing in color and texture and pushing the boundaries.
That is what makes Haus of Rowe work. We both have our strengths and know our weaknesses and can lean on each other.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing our vision come to fruition, to experience our clients reaction when the final piece is in place. The knowledge that they will make memories and feel in the spaces we create. Creating moments one space at a time.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think many creative people are their own worst critics. They tend to be very hard on themselves and have a tendency to second guess their abilities and wonder if the world will appreciate their gifts. Getting out of your own way is key. By putting yourself out there, being vulnerable and authentic, allowing space for those gifts to shine.
