We were lucky to catch up with Marcella Ellis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marcella , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
It all began as a natural evolution driven by supply and demand. Stylists and salons approached us, eager for training in advanced hair techniques to boost their income. In response, my team of four stylists and I embarked on a city-to-city tour, sharing our expertise.
Balancing the tour with our work at the salon was intense. Weekdays were spent doing hair, while weekends were packed with travel and training sessions. As media coverage highlighted our work, it became clear that I needed to scale the operation beyond myself and a small team to meet the growing demand.
To make this vision a reality, I developed a nationwide training program. I sought partnerships with venues across different cities and states, ultimately signing a game-changing deal with SalonCentric to utilize their classrooms and training spaces. This pivotal partnership allowed us to expand our reach and train stylists nationwide, transforming our initial tour into a scalable, impactful program.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and senior educator with 35 years of experience in the hair industry. My journey began as a passionate hair artist with a love for making people feel beautiful. From the start, I dreamed of being a businesswoman, and since hair was my craft, I merged my passion with entrepreneurship. As a mother and business owner, I’ve had the privilege of owning six successful weaving and hair salons across DC, Maryland, and Virginia, employing over 100 stylists and 200 educators throughout my career.
My path naturally evolved into education, leading me to open a 1,500-hour cosmetology school, which I later expanded into a nationwide training program. I’ve always prioritized healthy hair care and recognized the need for products with natural ingredients to support clients transitioning from chemical treatments. Out of that necessity, I began formulating natural hair care solutions in my salons, which led to the creation of Marcella Ellis Products.
What I’m most proud of is helping other entrepreneurs build and grow their businesses. There’s nothing more fulfilling than empowering individuals to create sustainable livelihoods and support their families. Teaching comes naturally to me, and I find immense joy in guiding others.
What sets me apart is my deep industry knowledge and ability to find practical solutions for students, partners, and clients alike. We specialize in advanced technical skill training and consistently seek innovative ways to help stylists grow their income and expand their reach.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Our reputation was built on providing exceptional service, word-of-mouth referrals, and media coverage. The organic buzz generated by our satisfied customers and positive media exposure fueled our growth and expansion. Every evolution in our business has been driven by demand, creating new opportunities along the way. As an entrepreneur and risk-taker, I’ve always embraced the mindset of recognizing opportunities and seizing them without hesitation.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Right now, my passion lies in securing corporate deals. Rather than focusing on independent customers, I’m prioritizing scaling operations through strategic corporate partnerships and collaborations. The opportunity to grow on a larger scale through these partnerships is both exciting and motivating.
