We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marcela De la paz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Marcela , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.

I currently work on MISS SABOR LATINA. After being rejected by the Latin media world for skin tone and in the African American world for my accent and not being able to audition for many roles for not fitting their standards. I created Miss sabor Latina. It’s an organization that’s focused on showing the Afro-Latin talent. From my pageant to skits and conferences. We want to show that we are latinas too, that we deserve recognition for our talent and that our skin tone doesn’t define us and we will be able to get on big platforms and show the world.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Marcela de La paz , I am an Colombian Afro-Latina. I am currently 29 years old. I was in the streets at a young age, trying to take care of myself. Everything I have I owe to God and I thank him for giving me a giving and forgiving heart and strength to fight for what I want. I am married and have two beautiful boys. I am currently working our Afro-Latin project, I am also part of champions club agency and last but not least. I am one of the hosts of our new show called “Cómo Asi” we can’t wait to show the world our show and of course our talent.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

Absolutely,

Awareness. I want to be able to turn the tv on and see equality. I don’t want to see an Afro-Latina as a maid. I want to see her as a main character. That’s my goal.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?

I really wish I knew the power of networking at a younger age. I would have gone to every networking event I was ever invited to. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Someone out there could give you the opportunity to reach your dreams
