We recently connected with Marc Mauldin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marc, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
My grandfather Bob Rogers is my hero. He started his career as a photographer during WWII aboard the USS Monterey. After the war he went to work for Kodak. We he retired Kodack ask him to come back and work as an ambassador.
He and my grandmother move to Hellen GA where where they built their dream home on top of a mountain and he continued his love for photography capturing the beauty that sounded them.
My grandfather love for what he did and relationships he made was always a huge inspiration to me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
In 2002, my junior year, studying filming photography at GSU, I got my start as a scenic carpenter at a photography ad studio building sets for Home Depot. At the same time I started touring with two bands as a lighting Director. After graduating in 2005, I started my freelance photography career as a photo assistant, working with photographers from all over in different types of photography. at the same time, the bands I were working with started touring the country full-time.
In 2010 I stopped touring with the bands as the lighting Director, and went on to being a full-time photographer, focusing on Interior design, product and catalog.
I have a huge passion for lighting spaces and building brands. I’ve also had a lot of exposure to high-end productions, working with creative directors and art directors. What sets me apart from most is my exposure over the last 21 years.
It’s important to me that my clients have the best experience when booking a shoot with me. As I always say this should be by far the most fun part of their process. Seeing their design come to life in photos. My knowledge, background and preparation before hand allows us to have a stress free day.
I have now been published with architectural digest, rue, traditional home, house, beautiful, HGTV, better Homes & Gardens, Atlanta magazine home, Atlanta, homes and lifestyle, modern lux, Southern Living.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
helping others visual ideas come to life. it’s so import to me that my clients walk away from a job learning something every time. it’s important that we all grow together. This way each shooter moving forward we elevate our process and work.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
exposure is everything. It’s so important to work with people that have been exposed to all areas of their craft. In the past I’ve worked with lots of photographers who never photo assisted before they became photographers. A lot of these people I could see struggle with understanding gear, and how lighting works. also photographers who have not been exposed or around high end productions that do not understand how to communicate with creative directors and art directors can also hold up the process or limit the outcome of the work. being exposed how to work with large teams of people is so important. Communication is key.
