We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maranova a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maranova, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
To be honest, I think I’ve been singing since the moment I figured out I could. My journey started at a pretty young age, around 5 or 6 years old, and my parents would always catch me singing along to my favorite songs on the radio. I’d turn anything into a makeshift microphone – hairbrush, remote control, you name it. I participated in various plays and productions, both musical and dramatic, my first one being at the age of 8. As I grew, outside influences told to pursue a more tradition goal, one that might be more “reliable”. These points fell on deaf ears however, and at 19, I moved to LA, with the hopes of being an actress, believe it or not. Eventually, I fell in love with the bright and promising music scene and haven’t looked back since !
Maranova, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My story is a pretty cool one, I’d say. I was born in Cheremkhovo, Russia, and at 18 months was adopted and raised by Italian-American parents in a small town in New Jersey. Growing up, I was surrounded by a diverse range of musical genres, including classic rock, pop and soul. I remember hearing bold sounds and powerful messages within these songs and feeling an undeniable shift within me much bigger than I might’ve realized at the time. I’ve felt an urge to create and in some way shape or form since forever. After participating in musical theatre for many years, I started writing my own songs and eventually decided to take the plunge – I moved out to LA two years ago and eventually found an incredible and welcoming music scene out here that I couldn’t get away from ! I have found the ability to create an emotion or experience through music beyond what the words could do on their own is something I will honor until the day I put down the pen for good.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I think the most important lesson I’ve learned from just living is how powerful and important doing what you love is. Being a child, one of the things we experience earliest and most often is being told what’s best for you and what’s not. Eventually, as we get older and gain knowledge from personal experience and preference, we begin to see what truly calls us. For some it comes later than others, but when it’s found, do not let it go. You have found your purpose. Do what makes your heart beat. I might not be the richest person, but if I’m chasing my dreams, I’m as rich as I’ll ever be.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The absolute joy of self expression is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. Especially when it resonates with others, whether it’s through emotions, thoughts or actions, when my art has an impact, I remember why it is I do what I do. The music is what calls me, but the community is what makes me stay. Collaborating with other artists, sharing experiences, and being part of a supportive network greatly enhances the gratification of being a creative.
