We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mara Cunningham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mara, appreciate you joining us today. Has Covid resulted in any major changes to your business model?
Yo! Crash celebrated its grand opening 3 days after the mass gathering ban in March of 2020. Seven days later we were shut down for 2.5 months. When opening a business, you always plan for what goes right, very seldomly do we plan and experience what goes wrong. In December of that same year, we closed our doors, a the direct hit from Covid.
Yo! Crash opened its doors to offer a fun and safe judgement free space for my community to release stress, rage, and aggression. The mission will always be the same, however our business model needed to change. We knew stress wouldn’t go away (if anything its heightened), so neither will we. If our customers cant come to us then we had to create a way to safely go to them.
Fast forward to 2023, three years removed from Covid and Yo! Crash is one of the leading Mobile Rage Rooms on the east coast. We’ve traveled 1000+ miles, serviced hundreds of people, helped fundraisers, company picnics, and serviced mental health events all while holding strong to our mission. Making the change wasn’t easy but we show our customers every day that there is a place “Where it’s okay to be” whatever, whenever, and now WHEREVER.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Have you heard of Rage Rooms? My name is Mara Cunningham, founder, owner and operator of Yo! Crash Mobile Rage Room. I started my company to directly address the stigma around mental health, I saw that my community needed an outlet that fostered self realization. Yo! Crash was birthed from the understanding that mental health can be addressed in a multitude of ways. We strive to be an inclusive, safe, and healing space for patrons to rid of any negative energy, frustration, or emotions in an unconventional and fun environments.
Whether it’s our mobile rage room where clients enjoy destruction therapy by destroying every day items like bottles, plates, TVs and printers or our additional take home stress relief gadgets that include fidget spinners, stress relief puzzles, and desktop games. I am so proud to say Yo! Crash provides functional fun, stress relief.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Yo! Crash has an amazing support system of past and future clients. I strongly believe our branding and true passion for our mission has built our reputation. We service with a level of excellency that we strive to meet on every occasion. Branding is not just your colors or logos; branding is how you speak to your customers, and how you connect with them. It is extremely important to us to convey authenticity within our branding. Our customers see we are real people connecting, learning, and growing alongside them. Our customers come to expect a level of excellency that is etched within the fibers of our branding and services.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Yo! Crash’s entire journey defines resilience from opening a brand new business days after the mass gathering ban in March 2020 and closing as the result of Covid to revamping and placing our passion on wheels. Yo! Crash is fueled by resiliency. So many of us fight the battles of depression, anxiety and stress every day and we choose to be resilient when we walk out into the world mindful of our mental capacity.
During the close of our storefront, we lost everything. During our rebuilding we gained so much more. Being resilient isn’t about where you’re headed, it’s about how you get there and the decisions in your character along the journey. Resilience is your willingness to fight through all of the hiccups, hills, and valleys along the way. Resilience is not knowing what’s on the other side, but not willing to give up the chance to finding out.
I’d say to anyone on a journey, be stubborn on your goal but flexible with your path. Learn that resilience isn’t resistance and nothing is beyond your limits.
