Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mao. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mao, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Being an artist is incredibly fulfilling for me! While there are times when I can’t draw due to artblock or school, I value the days I can just sit down and draw for a whole day. When I see the constant evolution of my art it just brings me so much joy and pride. It’s like a never ending learning process. The idea of a regular job may have crossed my mind occasionally, since I’m about to graduate from school. I certainly dreamed of a stable job however I don’t think it can replace the passion I have for art. But I’m still young, so I’ll need more time to think about this matter.
Mao, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Thank you for being interested in my work and taking time to learn about it! My artist name is Mimao but everyone just calls me Mao. I’m a freelance illustrator based in Germany and I specialize in using digital mediums to bring my artistic visions to life.
My work explores the intersection of history, culture and my personal imagination. Whether it’s designing intricate character designs or immersive concept art, I always try to balance art and history. I think I was always drawn to history and art, they were somehow always connected. For me history educates and inspires, while art reflects and expresses, especially when I focus on Chinese history it’s important for me to stay as original as possible. .
As a freelancer, I currently enjoy the freedom of Independence. Since I’m free I try to explore new possibilities each time, expanding my commitment for storytelling through visuals and the convey of emotions.
When I’m not drawing, I’m often immersed in the digital art community, sharing insights and techniques through tutorials and hacks on TikTok and Instagram or just staying up-to-date with the latest trends in the art community.
What sets me apart from others is the patience for details and historical accuracy. Each time I start a piece I firstly plan and collect as much historical context as I can. I flip through books, look through paintings and search the internet upside down. My friends are always astonished by the hard research I do before starting to actually draw. But that’s exactly the reason why I’m able to create strong storys and intricate pieces that resonate with the viewer.
Today I’m probably most proud of my achievements I have accomplished. I have not only gained many new friends and fans through my work but I also was able to fulfill my dream by creating a YouTube channel. The pride for my improvement, growth and the support of my community and friends is what moves me forward each time.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is definitely the impact on others. Art naturally has the power to inspire and provoke. If I read through my comments it’s always the most rewarding to know that my work is able to evoke strong emotions, bring joy or inspire. Seeing how my friends and community gains more courage to do the same despite their personal obstacles makes me want to never give up.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
First of all, its important to be confident and to be willing to try. When I started out I had major struggles in finding out what to do. Drawing a line between what you want to draw and what others want to see is surely the most difficult part. But with time it will come naturally, just enjoy the freedom of exploring new things. Never step back and stay authentic. The next simple step is to find friends. Finding those who are interested in the same field as me helped me to expand my community. Comment, share and just engage with your community. Supporting artists builds a sense of community naturally and helps to foster loyalty and encourage others to support you. Building a community is surely hard, but with authenticity and the right strategies you can definitely grow an audience.
