Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Manuk Torossian. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Manuk, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
It takes hard work and dedication to be successful, especially in the jewelry business. We work 6-7 days a week and when we have off, I am always trying to improve myself. I enjoy looking for new designs and creative ways to make our customers excited about buying jewelry. I am also always looking at the latest ways to improve my craft with new tools, lasers, etc. If there is a way to be better, more creative, or offer new services, I’ll do what it takes to get there.
Manuk, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My family has a clothing and design background in Turkey but when I was young, I got started making jewelry in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. I eventually came to New York City where I worked in the diamond district and my career in jewelry design took off. I have always enjoyed being a creative mind so that is why this is such a perfect industry for me. I specialize in custom jewelry design and it thrills me to help my clients design and create the perfect piece of jewelry for them. When my clients tell me that I’ve nailed it and they couldn’t be happier, I know that I’m doing exactly what I was meant to do. I am always making and designing new pieces to sell in our store in Buckhead and love when clients pop in to see the latest in our showcases. I am so proud of my customer service, craftsmanship and ability to give my clients top-notch jewelry. They trust me and they keep coming back year after year. The pride that I have for my work, helps me create the best relationships with my clients.
Have you ever had to pivot?
We had our business at the Merchandise Mart in downtown Atlanta for 20 years and during Covid, we faced a harsh reality. My wife and I decided to open our own store in Buckhead and move everything we knew into our own, stand-alone store. It was very exciting but scary at the same time. We have two, school-aged children so to make a move like that was definitely a big deal but we were able to move through the pandemic quite well. We opened our new store and our old clients followed! Our telephones continued to ring and people sought us out as we had built decades-long relationships that nobody wanted to break. It really was amazing that we had that support. Additionally, we met new customers due our move and it was such a blessing to have the support of our new walk-in clients that were thrilled to have us in the neighborhood. I am so thankful that we took the plunge–it was so worth it!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I would say that being honest and fair has been the most effective strategy in growing our clientele. We do not hide anything from our clients–we tell them if there’s a delay in shipping and we let them know if we run across any unforeseen circumstances that will delay their piece. That has really only been an issue during Covid and not knowing if supply chain issues will delay certain items getting to us on time but for the most part, our clients are very understanding. We work really hard to keep clients in the loop and that is why we have multi-generational clients. Our dedication to high quality speaks volumes and our clients don’t want to settle by working with anyone else in the business. We give them fair pricing and only make and sell high-quality items. We believe that our good work ethic and honest dealings have been the key reasons we’re in business today.
