We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Manuel Garrido-Rodriguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Manuel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I discovered my passion for music at the age of 14. At that time, I developed a profound connection with American music from the 70s and 90s, which served as a profound source of inspiration. Despite this early realization, I consistently felt misunderstood and never seriously considered pursuing music professionally. Consequently, I chose to become an industrial designer. However, upon immigrating to the USA in 2020, I experienced a renewed sense of freedom and opportunity, particularly towards my musical aspirations.
Upon settling in Decatur, Georgia, I decided to actively explore my musical scope. I began by participating in local open mics, playing acoustic guitar and singing covers. Subsequently, I collaborated with local live karaoke bands and engaged in jam sessions of jazz, steadily gaining confidence in my craft. The supportive artistic community in Decatur and Atlanta played a pivotal role in encouraging me to extend my musical endeavors. As I continued to immerse myself in the local scene, I eventually delved into busking and started creating my own music.
Presently, I am diligently working on creating and recording my first single with local musicians. The journey from feeling misunderstood to embracing my passion for music as a professional pursuit has been eye-opening and transformative. I am eagerly anticipating the possibilities that lie ahead for my musical career.

Manuel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Greetings! I’m Manuel Garrido-Rodriguez, a passionate guitarist from Santiago de Chile who is currently making waves in Decatur, Georgia. With over two decades dedicated to my craft, my musical journey has been a fusion of jazz, grunge, and classic rock influences, drawing inspiration from a diverse array of artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Buckley, Pink Floyd, and Miles Davis, among others.
Since my relocation to Decatur in 2020, I’ve been actively exploring the rich local music scene. Starting with covers at open mic nights and the raw, intimate experience of busking, I’ve embraced the vulnerability of public exposure, allowing me to evolve and experiment with my music. These experiences have not only bolstered my confidence but also forged genuine connections with audiences on the streets of Decatur Square, Harmony Park, and the BeltLine in Atlanta.
In 2021, I took a significant step by establishing “Zouthern Lights,” a conceptual band that encapsulates my musical identity. It serves as a formal platform for my covers and collaborations, representing a cohesive and professional showcase of my artistry. Currently, I’m in the exciting phase of assembling my band, carefully selecting musicians who share my passion for fusion music.
I take pride in my relentless dedication to self-guided exploration and continuous growth. My versatility as a musician, proficiency in both acoustic and electric guitar, and the authentic connections forged through performances are what set me apart. Zouthern Lights is a dynamic force in the fusion music scene, and I invite you to join us on this journey. Stay tuned as we illuminate the path we’ve carved through the fusion landscape, leaving our mark in the world of music.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Certainly, from the outset, my overarching aim has been to craft an immersive experience for my audience through a fusion of genres, including Latin music, rock, and jazz. I seek to push the boundaries of what fusion music can achieve, incorporating new mixes of rhythms and melodies to captivate listeners and take them on a journey of sound and emotion.
The creation of “Zouthern Lights” in 2021 marked a pivotal moment, providing a formal platform to present my covers and collaborations cohesively. Now, as I embark on a new chapter in 2024, assembling a band and crafting original songs, my mission is to solidify Zouthern Lights as a dynamic power trio able to attract new elements of fusion music to its layers. I aspire to captivate audiences not only in Atlanta but also in other states, bringing a distinctive Latin flavor to the fusion landscape and leaving an indelible mark on the music scene.
This mission goes beyond just creating catchy music; it’s about creating an inclusive experience that resonates with people from diverse backgrounds. Whether it’s the electrifying performances or the thought-provoking compositions, I want my audience to feel the depth and passion embedded in every song. The challenges and obstacles along the way, including establishing a presence for Latin artists in the USA, have only strengthened my determination to fulfill this mission.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society plays a vital role in supporting artists and fostering a vibrant creative ecosystem. One crucial aspect is providing platforms for artists to showcase their work, be it through local events, open mic nights, or collaborative spaces. This not only boosts individual artists but also contributes to the overall richness of the creative environment.
Financial support is also key. Establishing mechanisms like grants, scholarships, and funding opportunities can help alleviate some of the financial challenges artists often face. Recognizing and compensating artists for their contributions ensures that creativity can thrive without unnecessary barriers.
Lastly, education and advocacy programs are essential. Promoting an understanding of the value of art and creativity in society encourages support at both individual and institutional levels. This includes integrating arts education into curricula and fostering a culture that appreciates and celebrates diverse forms of artistic expression.
