We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mantey Twins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mantey below.
Hi Mantey, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Social media can be dangerous place to spend a lot of time. Most people would agree it’s mainly because of the emotional toll it can take on a creator. As a creator, you’re constantly putting yourself in spaces to be validated or ridiculed. And as we’ve seen over the past couple of years, that can have some pretty negative consequences. Our parents raised us to know who we are. Coupled with our sure identity in Christ, we haven’t been negatively impacted by social media. Because we know who we are, we weren’t taught identity by people who like or dislike our content, and that has allowed us to stay true to ourselves and our brand while finding our true community wherever we are. That, is a gift we received from them, and one we hold very close to our hearts.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We were born and raised in Ghana, only moving to the U.S. when we were 14 years old with our mother and our older brothers, Godfred and Alfred, who are also identical twins. We definitely faced challenges adapting to our new home but by God’s grace, we overcame them all by effort, discipline, and a whole lot of support.
The Bible says that “Your gift will make a way for you” and we have truly experienced that in our own lives. We began dancing in high school and haven’t looked back since. We created our TikTok account in 2020 at the encouragement of friends and loved ones, and have amassed quite the followership on our platforms, building a faithful community of supporters willing to invest in our story. We are lovers of dance, music, and fashion, and being identical twins, we easily capture attention online. We’ve dressed the same every day since birth (blame our parents), and we’ve managed to create a brand about our identity as twins in a world where we feel most encourage twins to seek their own identity apart from one given to them at birth. Make no mistake — we are different; Alvin is in medical school to pursue psychiatry and Kelvin is an engineer and a developer. We have managed to achieve what we have so far while schooling and working full time. We are hard workers and very driven individuals. I think one major value we bring as creatives is our innate ability to capture our audience and engage with them on a relatable level. We’ve been told that we are vibrant, funny, and that we carry positive vibes and energy in all we do. We carry ourselves with a high level of integrity and authenticity, and so it is a blessing to be liked and loved by our audience simply for who we are as people.
We believe in giving out of the abundance we have been given, giving out of the love, the grace, the mercy, the joy, and the peace that has been shown us. There is no better time be a light in what seems to be such a dark world nowadays. There is hope, and we want to be messengers of that hope, to encourage, to uplift, and to empower.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
In our experience, non-creatives can sometimes be overly critical of creatives, not quite understanding the sheer amount of effort it takes to do what they do. Content creating, as freeing as it can be, still demands a great deal of work, intention, and vulnerability. We share our lives with the world and we put a lot of time into our craft to make sure we put out quality material for viewers. What looks like a 60-second video is a lot of time, sweat, and effort on the back end that goes unseen. So, our advice is, if you see someone working hard to put something out there, aim to support and encourage them. And if you do have something to say (because we recognize the social contract of social media, which is, if it’s out there, it’s fair game), make it constructive :)
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
There are different facets to this question.
Firstly, we are driven by the desire to do the best with what we have been given. To whom much is given, much is required and we want to reach the height of our fullest potential, whatever that may be.
Secondly, we do what we do to do what we can. We live in a world that can be lonely, cold and dark at times, and if wearing a smile on a LIVE while we interact with people from everywhere and anywhere can be a testament that hope still remains, then we’ll wear them all day!
