Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Manon Alexandra. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Manon, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Not only are our products aesthetically pleasing, they are cruelty free and ecofriendly! I only ever use ecofriendly biodegradable glitter in all of our products. When it comes to our packaging, we also only use ecofriendly shrink wrap bags, biodegradable packing peanuts and recycled packing supplies. Although it is more expensive to be ecofriendly, this is something that Man on the Moon Mystics has been practicing since the beginning, and I find it extremely important to continue to do so. I care very much about sustaining our planet and am always open to finding new ways my business can be even more ecofriendly.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Man on the Moon Mystics; handmade, ecofriendly sweet and spooky bath products with a surprise crystal inside! I have always had sensitive skin myself, and I have found that the market for products I could use were always simple and boring. I decided to take my passion for oddities and horror, add my own twist of color, and create unique bath treats safe for those with sensitive skin. I create bath bombs, soaps, body lotions, whipped sugar scrubs, body washes, bath oils and more!
All of our products also contain a surprise crystal inside! With each product I provide a crystal identification chart that explains which crystal you uncovered and a description of what the crystal means. By adding this feature, it makes it fun for people of all ages, and makes them excited to use the bath products. Everything I create is cruelty free, vegan and ecofriendly.
Sweet & Spooky is the vibe. Our uniquely shaped bath bombs are what set us apart from others. A jolly rancher scented eye ball bath bomb? Yes. A rainbow skull bath bomb scented like fruit loopz? Of course. A bat skeleton bath bomb scented like peach mango? Definitely. A toaster bath bomb? You bet. To emphasize our spooky, we are currently on tour with the oddities and curiosities expo. I travel all across the United States with them, setting up and doing shows in big cities. This year I was able to partake in 11 locations, but next year I plan on doubling that number. It has been so rewarding to go on the road and meet so many people who appreciate what I do and our mission.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I wanted to take my love for all things spooky and create bath products that were safe for people with sensitive skin, like I have. When I first started out about 7 years ago, everyone thought the crazy bath bomb shapes were in fact odd and different. I was told to calm it down a bit and stick to the pretty flower shapes and more traditional style soaps. However, I knew there were other people out there like me who would appreciate my art, so I started up a little etsy. When I started getting amazing feedback and selling out of things, I realized maybe I was onto something. At the time I was still in college, double majoring in psychology and criminal justice. I was only making the bath products on the side for fun. I decided to give it a shot and I began signing up to do craft shows and sell what I was making at local markets. Before I knew it, everything I was taking to these shows quickly began to sell out. I would take more and more, sign up for shows with bigger audiences, and I found that the more I put into my business, the more I was getting out of it. I realized I truly have a passion for creating these products and having the freedom to express my artistic side, and that I am appreciated for it. The first time I was asked to make a tv appearance at my local news station and talk about my business I was so nervous! It was definitely a huge milestone for me. Since then, I have done more tv appearances, I have been featured on buzzfeed multiple times and I have had a couple of my creations go viral on social media.
In 2022 I began touring with the oddities and curiosities Expo which travels all across the US showcasing your not so ordinary vendors. I found my audience. I decided to risk it and put everything I have into traveling with this expo this year, doing all of their shows on the east coast. I have always had a love for traveling, so the fact that I can see the U.S. and make money doing it with something I enjoy doing, I realized, this is exactly what I want to do. This year I have done 11 locations with the expo, each one more successful than the next. Next year, I plan on branching out and making it all the way to the west coast with the expo. This is my dream job, and i feel so lucky that I was given the opportunity to be a part of such an incredible experience.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source for new clients has definitely been the oddities and curiosities expo and really all the other in person festivals and shows I sell at. I really enjoy meeting people and hearing the positive feedback from them. The best is when I repeatedly have customers come back for more, year after year. Or when I have new customers find me and say they found me on tiktok or instagram and cant wait to try my products. Being able to travel with the expo all across the US has made it possible for me to reach an audience that just would not have been possible if I stayed within my state. In my case, putting all i have into traveling and taking the risk to drive 8 hours here, 12 hours there to shows has been worth it, and it only makes me want to branch out even further.
