We recently connected with Manny King and have shared our conversation below.
Manny, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
When I was younger, I always loved watching my family’s home videos, and looking at our photo albums. So many moments in time and so many stories came from these images. I got my first camera when I was 9, and since then I’ve wanted to recreate those feelings i felt when looking at those videos and pictures. I create to attempt to envoke those feelings of tenderness and nostalgia in all of my work. I want to make you feel those things when you watch my films or look at my photos.
Manny, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started videos a while back, but I officially became a professional photographer and filmmaker about 5 years ago. I’ve done some work with companies like Calvin Klein, Netflix, but even with some rap artists like Young Nudy, Travis Scott, and more. I do commercial work as well as editorials and short films.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My end goal is to open up my own creative studio: Bourne Creative Studio. I want this to be a resource for the next creative generation. Growing up and learning more about this industry, I realize that minorities don’t have a lot of access to these type of resources and it hinders us a lot. I want to bridge that gap as much as I can.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I used to use Instagram as a place to post whatever I was thinking. Actually, I still use it that way today. The difference is now I use my work as that translator to communicate how i felt, what i think about, etc. So i would post consistently, on all my social channels. As long as you’re confident in what you make, your peers will begin to take notice and support. But this isn’t a one way street, uplift your other creator friends and this cycle repeats. Eventually you’ll build a following and more and more people will recognize you and your unique work.
