We were lucky to catch up with Manne Von M recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Manne, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
In the last few years, I have fulfilled my dreams, and they, in turn, have brought new dreams. I have had many projects, among which I would like to highlight some concerts held in Florida, USA, where my performer was mezzo-soprano Madison Mcintosh. Writing specifically for her voice was a great pleasure for me, because the colours of her voice are inimitable. We started working on ”Letting him go” ( duet for piano and voice), The lyrics to this, I may also call it a romance, were written by Armando Maysonet. The text was sad at first glance, as it was dedicated to someone’s memory, but as I studied it, I realized that even here there is a small glimmer of hope and light. I tried to write this as a requiem, but where there are good memories of human love that keep it alive. After this project, I continued working with Madison and we had a few concerts in Florida. These concerts, made possible by the efforts of Voices of the Valiant and Madison McIntosh, filled me with inspiration and love.
My very recent recording is ” Ave Verum Corpus” – a duet for piano and voice ( Piano by Deren Bratian & Soprano Lilya Hovhannisyan). This project we performed in my country – during different concerts and it fills my heart with great emotions. Now, I’m working on international projects soon in Poland, Hungary & Netherlands.
We worked on my ‘’Ave Verum Corpus ‘’ for half a year. When I first heard Lilya’s voice, new
colors came to my eyes and ears. This song seems like it was written just for her. I will never
forget the devotion my musicians showed. The very first day of the rehearsal, the very first
touch of my pianist was already what I wanted. Deren is so talented that can play for the first
time as if he’s tried a thousand times. On the day of our first rehearsal, there was terrible
snow and terrible traffic in the city. We were just trying some minimalist phrases and it was
spreading on the air. My music was coming to life from paper. I was truly amazed, how piano
overtones were filling the rehearsal room.
The first prerequisite for this collaboration was the energy that united the three of us. We
think and feel music in the same way.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my career as a film director. At that time and always I was engaged in music, however, over time I realized that I should do what I love the most. Cinema, by the way, was very successful for me, I received gold statuettes, shared with world catalogues, received a gold medal from the President of Armenia and numerous awards from 30 countries around the world․ At a very lucky moment, I promised myself that I would do what would bring me complete happiness in life. Fortunately, music brought me not only happiness, but also success. What I am most proud of is being able to transcribe the art in my mind onto paper. That is the best gift the universe has given me.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
For a musician, the most important point should be philosophy and worldview.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I can give numerous and individual examples from each art and genre. In cinema, Visconti’s ”Death in Venice” had a great influence on me. My favourite books are: Machiavelli’s ”The Prince ” & ”Napoleon” by Manfred. These two books have shaped me as a fighter who must achieve his goals at all costs. I have been greatly influenced by the philosophers of the Enlightenment, and that inspiration is expressed in my cello suite ” The dialogue between d’Alembert & Diderot” and in my string quartet ” Matinee at Versailles”.
