We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mani Pannu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mani, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
From what I’ve seen across many industries — especially creative ones like photography — success tends to hinge on five core principles:
1. Relentless Consistency
Even when inspiration is low, consistently showing up, marketing, editing, delivering — builds momentum. It earns trust. People remember who’s always there, not who occasionally shows brilliance.
Anecdote: Annie Leibovitz, the renowned portrait photographer, wasn’t always seen as “the best.” What separated her was consistency and dependability. Editors could trust she’d deliver. Over time, that beat flashier but less consistent talent.
2. A Signature Style
Anyone can take a clean photo, but not everyone can take a Mani Pannu photo. When clients start requesting your look, not just your service, that’s when you’re a brand, not a vendor.
Story: I once read about a wedding photographer in L.A. who built her reputation on using deep, cinematic shadows and desaturated tones — a look initially out of fashion. She kept at it, and eventually, clients sought her precisely for that. Now, it’s a trend.
3. Client Experience Over Everything
People might come for the art, but they return for the experience — how you made them feel. Were you calm under pressure? Did you respond quickly to emails? Did you listen?
Example: A boudoir photographer in Canada had average technical skills, but she made her clients feel empowered and beautiful during vulnerable shoots. Word-of-mouth built her six-figure business.
4. Adaptability with a Core
Technology and trends shift constantly (AI tools, reels, drones, etc.). The most successful creatives evolve without losing their essence.
Insight: I’ve seen photographers who refused to use social media fall behind, while others adapted — turning behind-the-scenes clips or Lightroom tutorials into powerful marketing.
5. Meaning Beyond Money
There’s often a deeper “why” under sustainable success — whether it’s capturing love, telling untold stories, or building a legacy. People are drawn to those with purpose.
Steve Jobs once said: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” But it’s not just love — it’s belief that your work matters.
My Own Perspective
I’ve been trained on many success stories, business case studies, and personal anecdotes. What stands out to me isn’t genius — it’s resilience. Those who treat their craft like a relationship (not just a career) tend to win. They forgive themselves for bad days, get back up, evolve, and keep chasing the spark.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Photographers who last this long (15 years for us) usually keep learning — whether it’s mastering new editing techniques, trying different lighting setups, or refining client flow. That kind of quiet dedication isn’t loud, but clients feel it.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
To manage a team and keep morale high, lead with clarity, empathy, and trust. Set clear expectations and goals, but give your team autonomy to do what they do best. Recognize individual contributions often — not just with praise, but with genuine appreciation that shows you see their effort. Create a safe space for feedback and growth, and model the attitude you want to see — especially during high-stress times. People stay motivated when they feel valued, challenged, and connected to a shared purpose.
