We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mandy Tamborini. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mandy below.
Alright, Mandy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Covid has brought about so many changes – has your business model changed?
Covid completely changed my business. I lost all of my mobile business and large accounts during Covid. I had jus resigned a lease on a factory space to handle my large orders and grow. After sitting in the space for a year. I was either going to go out of business, or pivot and focus more on prepacked cotton candy and items.
Mandy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Spun Sugar Detroit is a gourmet cotton candy company. We offer over 55 flavors of organic sugar and traditional sugars to make cotton candy. Our organic line is made with plant based dyes and organic sugar. Traditional cotton candy is offered as well. I got into the industry after working my crushing corporate job for over 10 years. I was working for a horrible man that didn’t respect or take care of his employees. During a commercial shoot in California. I met a girl on Venice Beach who was spinning cotton candy. We got to talking and the rest is history. I came back to Michigan to start building the Spun Sugar Detroit brand. We started in 2017 with our first cotton candy private event at the Detroit Institute of Arts- Fash Bash.
When I started this company, I was the only person offering cotton candy mobile services in Michigan. I was also the only organic cotton candy line. Fast forward to 2022, there are over 35 cotton candy companies in Michigan now.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Just as I signed my lease space to grow my company with wholesale and events, Covid came and I lost everything. I did a pivot and changed my factory into a candy store. I opened during Covid -September 2020. The store has been a huge success
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is so important to a business. I knew that I needed to build my brand on social media and to do that I was active everyday – posting on my business and making fun brand photos to have locals want to follow my page. I created promotions and was always posting fun content.
