We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mandy Schulis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mandy , thanks for joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I started this crazy journey after retiring from Massage Therapy in early 2022. I’ve always been very into energy and healing pain points. It was something I have always been inherently good at, so I was heartbroken when the nerve damage in my left hand became too painful to continue my career. I took a logical approach of pivoting to help other entrepreneurs. I’ve been in business for myself for over 18 years. Combining that success with an MBA, I decided, at first, to go into branding, copywriting, digital marketing, etc…. more “traditional” business consulting. I landed a few clients, but I noticed a pattern of business owners wanting to strictly sell their product and not themselves, which is a huge mistake. People buy into you way before they buy into what you are providing and competing on price/ services alone is for the big box stores, not small businesses. I quickly realized it was from two things, a) fear of being seen and b)from a need to heal their own personal stories. Thus, Mandy Schulis & Co was born. I started off branding as a coach, but honestly, what I do is a lot deeper than that so I prefer mentor and consultant. I work with female entrepreneurs to release their judgement around their personal stories and learn how to leverage them for business success. My process not only salves personal pain points, but allows their businesses to grow exponentially farther than they would otherwise.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into storytelling when I realized that what I did in massage was to help release the stories and pain stuck in the body, now I help release the pain from personal stories stuck in business. It usually shows up as women that are stuck at a certain level of success, unable to level up from there. It all comes back to strategy and mindset. My clients are very aware that we work on both, not just one or the other. The ways to work with me range from 1:1 to group options. My long term 1:1 are limited just because they are SUPER intense and a lot of work is required. Think of me as a personal Jimminy Cricket that helps you dig into where the stories are stuck. The other 2 options currently are “The Story Shift”, which is a 6 month group program where we identify which stories are yours and which were inherited/ “gifted”. Then we figure out which ones stay, which ones go and which ones need to be reframed. The 2nd program option is business strategy and is known as the “Story Strategy” and this is a 6 week 1:1 intensive where we dig into your personal story and purposefully weave it into your branding or create a new offering for your business based around your story.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I haven’t met a female founder or CEO that doesn’t have an incredible story yet. My mission is for every successful woman to know that her story matters. I am a domestic abuse survivor and one thing I swore was that I would help other women learn to use their voice to tell their stories because someone once tried to silence mine. This isn’t just a business for me, this is very much a mission.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It’s the hardest and the most rewarding, lol. It’s that there is no end to my work and there’s no framework, really. You have to create it and then keep refining it.
