We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mandy Ronay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mandy , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
A dominant trend within my industry revolves around the inadvertent detrimental influence of parents on their children’s athletic endeavors. What concerns me the most is the frequent disregard or reluctance to address this issue, allowing the harmful conduct, unattainable standards, and intense pressure imposed by these parents to significantly contribute to heightened mental health challenges among young athletes.
While I am very concerned about this trend, I see it as an incredible opportunity and responsibility to share my knowledge, experience and expertise. My aim is to assist others in acquiring the necessary tools and skills to effectively support their young athletes’ in a healthy way.
There is a growing trend across the nation where an increasing number of athletes are experiencing mental challenges within their sport. This is leading to a high rate of athletes quitting at a young age, and many feel they lack support. However, there is optimism that more people are committing to providing education and support to parents, athletes and coaches in navigating this constantly evolving landscape.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, I’m Mandy Ronay, the founder and CEO of Ronay Mindset Coaching, LLC. As a Mindset Performance coach, my primary focus is on assisting athletes in achieving consistent peak performance levels and supporting them through challenges that might be hindering their progress. My ultimate objective is to empower them with invaluable tools and skills that will help them both on the playing surface and in LIFE!
As a former Division I collegiate athlete and coach, along with a decade-long tenure as a high level skills trainer, I recognized a pressing need for young athletes. Despite the intensifying competition, the mental aspect of the game was often overlooked, even though it is one of the two most pivotal factors in athletic success.
My work involves collaborating with teams, coaches, individual athletes, parents, and organizations to help cultivate a toolbox that enables them to manage the current pressures they are facing in their sport and in life. I have a unique perspective because I have experienced high-level competition and pressure as a standout high school player, been recruited by hundreds of colleges, played at the top level of college basketball; served as a college coach, tasked with recruiting top talent nationwide; and currently, I’m a parent observing the sports landscape from the sidelines. This multifaceted experience sets me apart in my approach.
I am driven by a strong sense of purpose, fueled by my passion for sharing knowledge gained through personal experience. It is crucial, I believe, for us as a society to actively engage in this process. These young athletes need our support and a few tools to successfully navigate today’s world!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that being “tough” and “sucking it up” was not always the most healthy habit. As a high level athlete growing up it was go, go, go ALL of the time. Never, ever taking time for rest and recovery…. which led to resentment, exhaustion and injury. I am still a huge believer in going hard, being consistent, and always giving my best, but I also allow myself a day here and there to fully recover and restore. I have learned that I am a much better human being when I take care of myself!

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
In addition to running my own coaching business, I am also currently the Regional Director of Restore Hyper Wellness franchise. I have coached and managed many teams over the last 25+ years, so this is a VERY important topic to me.
#1 Find your people and take care of your people! You brought them on board for a reason, they excel in certain areas! I once listened to a podcast discussing the outdated assembly line approach, where workers were pigeonholed into specific tasks, leading to burnout and job dissatisfaction. The landscape has evolved, and in my opinion, effective managers and leaders now focus on extracting the unique strengths of each individual. This approach not only fosters employee satisfaction but also ensures that the organization benefits from their exceptional talents. That is a win-win situation!
Building high morale relies on consistent check-ins and your ability as a manager to bring in positive energy every day! Energy, whether positive or negative, is contagious. When you instill daily positivity with enough team members, others naturally follow suit. Cultivating a fun and relaxed workplace environment encourages individuals to be authentic, thereby enhancing their performance. Through my experience, I have learned that prioritizing the well-being of your team yields a significant return on investment. When everyone feels valued and included in the team’s success, employees are not only happy and enjoy coming to work, but surpassing goals becomes inevitable!
