We were lucky to catch up with Mandy Brisco recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mandy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I’m a huge believer in the power of social media for businesses. I started and grew my business with an entry level camera and a Facebook page. Social media, when used correctly, provides businesses with an opportunity to connect, engage, and provide value to their audience and community.
I have been managing my own social media accounts for the last 10 years in business. I follow a specific formula for content creation that is specific to the needs of my clients as well as what is relevant for my business. In less than a couple of hours, I am able to batch and schedule a month’s worth of content in one sitting.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Mandy Brisco, owner and photographer of Amanda Brisco Photography. I started my business 10years ago with no experience in photography or business. My husband gifted me a camera for Christmas to take pictures of our two young sons. I quickly fell in love with the process of photographing and editing. I started taking pictures of friends and family, built a small portfolio, started a Facebook page and the rest is history.
Within my first year of business, I fell in love with wedding photography. I niched down from photographing everything to photographing weddings and the following year was covering close to 30 weddings per year. I went full time into weddings for about six years before I felt a shift. I developed a passion for meeting with other business owners and when asked to photograph headshots and branding, I found a new love of business and photography. During the pandemic, I pivoted my business, opened a studio, and went full time into brand photography.
I now help businesses, brands, and real estate agents by creating custom branded imagery and engaging content so that they can effectively market to and connect with their audience.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Within the first year of my business I became a full time wedding photographer. I was photographing close to 30 weddings per year and I absolutely loved it. Until I didn’t. About 6 years in, I felt a shift and couldn’t quite put my finger on it. For a short time I thought it was time to close my business all together. It wasn’t until I realized that I had lost my passion for wedding photography that I began to regain my focus and passion elsewhere. I loved networking with other small business owners, loved content creation, and loved beautifully branded websites. Branding photography was the way to shift. It was a scary transition as my business was fully established and here I was, almost 7 years in and I was starting a business all over again. I was determined to make it work and I did. It took me about 2 full years to transition out of wedding photography and when the pandemic hit, that put a hold on the final transition. I was thankfully able to open my studio mid-pandemic, August of 2020 to be exact, and I’ve been busy ever since.
