We were lucky to catch up with Manda Malina recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Manda thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Right now I am working on my first EP. I’ve been wanting to do an album/EP for a really long time but needed a few years to grow as a person and as an artist, and to figure out what I wanted to tell with my music, instead of putting music out just because. It’ll be out in September and it’s been so fun so far to come up with the concept, writing such a personal story and work with my team to come up with the visual theme, etc.
A big risk for me as a singer, has always been to be so open and raw about my sexuality. The music industry is such a hetero and male dominated field, that before coming out, I was worried it would affect my career in a bad way. As I’ve grown more comfortable in my queerness, I’ve found the queer community so extremely supportive, and how all of us queer musicians are really changing the game just by being ourselves.

Manda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my career in Sweden, where I was born and raised, in X-Factor as a 17-year old, and that really jumpstarted my career as a singer, where I got a record deal and a management shortly after. Although I moved to Los Angeles just shortly after, I really got my feet wet as an artist but grew more as a songwriter in America. Now I am doing music independently full-time, and I also write music for other artists and DJ’s.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I wish I knew earlier how awesome it is to be an independent artist! I used to think that being signed should be the ultimate goal, but being indie gives me so much freedom and makes me feel more creative.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My advice is to try to stay consistent and to show your personality. I really try to be more consistent, and that’s hard because most of the time I just want to focus on doing music and performing, But when I post regularly, I do see a big increase in engagement. I just try to be myself as much as possible and show my personality!
