We were lucky to catch up with Malu Martins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Malu, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
The first time I realized I wanted to work as an actress was while watching the behind the scenes for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The whole movie was amazing to me, I was totally sucked in and I wanted more content from it, so I went on the Bonus Features of my DVD. Just watching the whole process of making the movie and seeing the actors having fun, and then getting into character for the more intense scenes, it felt so eye opening to me. Seeing all that creativity flow, made me want to join in and I knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Malu, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Malu Martins and I am an actress. My journey in the industry was actually incredibly arduous, and still is.
I’m from Brazil, and I knew from an early age I wanted to do movies, and that I loved speaking English and wanted to live in the USA. I spent many years studying acting and improving my skills. As a foreign student, I worked on many student films which was great for building my confidence of being on set, such as Arise, Sapphire, Stained Glass, Aberdeen, Blackout and others.
However, due to being on a student visa, I had to start my professional journey a bit late. Once I received my green card I was then able to pursue an agent and get my career going. I am extremely thankful though, for all the years I spent learning the craft. I’ve been able to learn different techniques like Meisner, Strasberg, Hagen, and Adler. I like to pick and choose between all of them to build my own toolbox. There’s no right or wrong way to act, I think, you can simply choose the best options for yourself and go from there. As long as there’s truth in your work, you’re fine. That’s what I believe in. The most important aspect of acting is truth telling, the rest is the icing on the cake.
I’ve been fortunate to book a CVS commercial in 2020 (yes in the middle of the pandemic! It was a commercial to raise people’s spirits once everything opened up again), a movie in 2023 (Zombie Apache, a Zombie Comedy, which we affectionately called ZomCom), and various short films ever since (Older Self, The Devil’s Entrance, Consumption, AberJosie). It has been a long journey, but I’m so happy to have an agency now and be in pursuit of continuing my career. I’m currently in talks for another project, which we hope to make reality sometime this year. So make sure to keep your eyes peeled for my future work!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of storytelling through film is the deep connections it fosters among people. Movies have the power to resonate with our experiences and allow us to explore emotions in a shared space. Just as I find solace in connecting with characters on screen, I aspire to create that same experience for audiences.
Knowing that my stories might offer comfort, inspiration, or liberation is incredibly fulfilling. Whether through laughter in a comedy or tears in a drama, my goal is to uplift and unite viewers. I want them to leave feeling understood and connected, creating a tapestry of shared human experience that resonates deeply.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I spent much of my beginning time in the USA as a student, going to acting classes, which I’m very thankful for. But not being able to audition for bigger things because of that was hard at times. However all those classes have prepared me beyond my wildest imaginations for where I’m at now in my career. I think making sure I was working on myself and my craft were things that kept me sane. And obviously trying my hardest to make my dreams come true was a big guiding light for me. It was hard, but it was so worth it.
