We were lucky to catch up with Mallory Beardsley (Godin) recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mallory, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about your team building process? How did you recruit and train your team and knowing what you know now would you have done anything differently?
Restore & Renew Counseling started from the ground up. The first therapist that was hired ended up being from my alma mater. It was neat to have had that initial connection. Immediately I took that as a good sign and from there, we were looking for therapists with specific specialities and backgrounds to begin building the practice. Interview process was a lot of making sure the therapists goals are in line with private practice and seeing what their areas of speciality are. I ended up getting a training grant that was used to provide continuing education for therapists in the realm of trauma, and that helped to build speciality. After the first few initial hires, many came through word of mouth and connections amongst therapists. It’s been nice to see the group grow and I am so grateful for the team currently at Restore & Renew Counseling.
Mallory, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Currently, Restore & Renew Counseling offers therapy services to a broad range of individuals. I would say our specialty is within the area of being trauma informed, specifically in the area of EMDR. It’s been amazing to see the training that the therapists have been able to participate in. A variety of clients reach out to the practice ranging from wanting faith-based, to neurodivergence, OCD, anxiety, and depression. I believe that the team at Restore & Renew offers a broad spectrum of therapists willing to meet clients where they are at and incorporate modalities from their continuing education and growth as clinicians.
One of the most important aspects of Restore & Renew Counseling is the fact that we are a holistic practice. We have begun to redirect out focus to maternal health and clinicians are in the process of getting certified in maternal mental health. There is such a need for supporting women processing through infertility, pregnancy and post-partum, that we as a practice are trying to meet the challenges that are being faced and bring more awareness.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Authenticity and focusing in on a specific speciality. Many times I see therapists that want to have a broad spectrum of speciality. The problem with that is, you are not working on developing in a specific area and therefore, that lack of focus causes mediocrity in a lot of different areas. From what I have witnessed, clients want to know you specialize in a specific area and they find that it is helpful when implementing a tx plan for clients, as well as providing interactive activities within and homework outside of therapy.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
When I think about managing a team and keeping high morale, it’s all about autonomy of the therapist and creating an environment where they feel heard and validated in their business and the work they are doing with clients. A big part of doing that is coming together for consultations and chatting about highs and lows with clients, paperwork, and even personal. Creating and forming relationships with the team is another huge aspect of keeping morale high. Allowing open communication fosters a safe environment where each therapist feels heard and respected and that is most important. Finally, it’s allowing therapists the flexibility in their schedule, along with being able to choose the specific clients they work with and what that looks like and how it reflects them and the work they are doing. Taking time to bring therapists in the group together as well as meet each one of them where they are and provide a supportive and flexible work environment is the most important aspect.
