We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mallian Butler . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mallian below.
Hi Mallian, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project that I’ve worked on is my most recent project called Premonition. This project is so meaningful to me because it came from my family’s production company called Axiom, it was my first time executive producing, we were able to get an industry veteran who is also a close family friend, Bill Duke to star in our film and we were able create such an incredible film in only 8 days and we were able to get amazing distribution on major streaming platforms such as Amazon, Peacock and Tubi and many more.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Mallian Butler. I’m a 17 year old actress and I’ve been in the industry for 7 years. I’ve starred in Black-ish, Family Reunion, Mistletoe in Montana, and my most recent project is a feature film that came from my family’s production company, Axiom, called Premonition where I led the film and co- executive produced. I am also a Young Arts 2024 Winner and presidential scholar nominee. I have had the honor of being a winner of many other awards including the Young Artist Award for Best Leading Actress in a Series. I have attended performing arts schools my entire high school career and plan to spend the rest of my life pursuing acting.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My ultimate goal is to leave a legacy and to make a mark. As a black woman in the industry, there’s hardly a place for us and we are often looked over. I want to inspire black girls and I want to make a place for all of us through my work. I want other black girls to see me and think to themselves “If she can do it, so can I.”
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
This is a tough industry to break into and throughout my career, there have been countless times that I’ve heard, “You’re amazing but we’ve decided to go a different direction.” “We decided to do something different with the storyline.” “She’s great, However….” It’s very common to hear these things and the constant rejection can be discouraging but when I have my mind set on something, I go all in and I will not give up or get knocked down. Failure is only possible through giving up.
