We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maliyah Mayfield. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maliyah below.
Maliyah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Indie Collectiv is a collective of one of a kind goods by independent makers and creators! The concept came about from the personal need of community and brand exposure! I am very passionate about my Small Businesses and helping others excel in their careers as well. This idea is also an extension from our networking group “Gurl 2 Girl” where we host weekly Women’s Makers Markets. Our pop up shop is a progressive step for small businesses to gain brand awareness on a daily basis!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Absolutely! My name is Maliyah Mayfield and I am an entrepreneur based in Atlanta, Georgia. I graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2017 and quickly jumped into my Entrepreneurial journey soon after. I started off with my handcrafted jewelry line Kalua Rae. At the time I was attending many different markets and I saw what was missing for our community, especially women. This led me to creating my networking group Gurl 2 Girl in 2019 where we host weekly Women’s Makers Markets. Many of the businesses that attended our markets were growing at a fast rate, so I created our temporary Pop Up shop Indie Collectiv as a progressive step from attending Markets. Indie Collectiv gives businesses an opportunity to showcase their items to the public on a daily basis!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Having a Brick & Mortar is not easy, especially when consumers can shop from the comfort of their own homes. A time when I had to “pivot” is when we realized this harsh reality, so we launched our online marketplace! This gives consumers the opportunity to shop both online and in-store.

Any fun sales or marketing stories?
One day we were having a really slow sales day in-store. Instead of feeling discouraged and giving up, I kept a positive upbeat attitude throughout the day informing everyone what we offer that passed by the store. We had about 2 hours until closing, and a customer came in super excited about our offerings and spent over $400 because they wanted to support Small Businesses! Moral of the story, never give up and keep good energy flowing because it will attract the right people.
