Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Malissa Patterson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Malissa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Scrumptious Organic Care was founded seven years ago because I needed to find ways to heal my skin. However, if i think to “way back when”, I have always been tinkering in my mother’s kitchen as a teenager.
Having experienced psoriasis and acne, I decided to research natural ways to curb dry and inflamed skin that sometimes cracked so badly that my fingers bled. Therefore, Scrumptious Organic Care has developed into a Body, Hair, Face and Feet natural line that aims to improve skin and hair confidence.
I was encouraged to bring some of my products to a place of business and from then it was suggested that I register said business. From then on, I began creating more products. I also began researching and learning from recognised skin care industries.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For us at Scrumptious, it is more than just beauty – it encapsulates confidence. How can our products improve your journey to skin and hair confidence? We have created oils, scrubs, masks, lotions and butters that nourish the skin and give you one less issue to think about.
We don’t want you to hide your hair and skin, we want you to embrace your entire self.
We want cracked dry heels to go away. We want those with circulation and pain to see improvement in their feet.
I am most happy when I get excited customers who have seen improvement. For example, those who have said their hairline has started to grow back or those who have told me that using my products have made them feel more beautiful.
I always follow-up with my customers once I have a contact for them as I believe in impeccable customer service.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
COVID – 19 came at us like a raging bull and sent us all scampering. For a micro entrepreneur in the product business, that could have spelled disaster.
Before COVID-19 I would have frequented markets as well as visited offices to promote my products. However, just before the pandemic, I would have felt a need to strengthen my online presence and so just when COVID-19 tried to knock me down, I was able to pivot to online sales.
This meant I was still able to sell and promote my products and mail them instead of physically delivering.
Sadly, I have seen many micro-entrepreneurs close their business due to the pandemic.
I would have also used my online platform to encourage businesses to stay afloat and think creatively during that time.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
HMMM…this is an interesting question, meaning that I have heard many businesses and just regular individuals state they cannot save because things are too hard. Now, that can be true to a point.
However, for me, I believe that even if you make $4. LOL, you should save something. Because everything adds up.
What I would have done is used some of my small savings from previous jobs before I became a micro entrepreneur and did a forecast so I had an idea of how much I would need.
I also believe in varying one’s income stream, so I would have saved from my days of marketing, little by little, piece by piece, until I was able to grow enough to begin.
I did not wait until everything was perfect and in fact I would have really launched with three main products – a Face Mask, a Foot Butter and a Hair Moisturiser. Those three have remained staples. I now have almost twenty products.
