We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Malika Naomi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Malika, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
It all started when I was working my first job at Universal Orlando as a sales associate, I just finished junior year of high school and took an interest in graphic design. At the time I was doing graphics on my phone and wanted to take it more serious as I started to get noticed on social media so I was brainstorming names and wanted mines to stand out compared to other graphic designers in the business who had way more experience. So one day at work I came across the word signature and it stuck with me so I was trying to think of ways to incorporate the word signature in my business name and I figured why not add my name Malika in front of it and then Malika’s Signature was born.
Malika, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The back story on how I got into graphics goes back to May 2018 where I was finishing junior year where I started my entrepreneurial journey selling phone cases, at the time I was doing my own graphics on my phone and was doing everything on my own such as graphics, content, shipping, etc. And once my senior year hit I decided to pursue something else since selling phone cases started to become a challenge for me even though being an Entrepreneur wasn’t going to be easy. With graphics there was a passion for it and still is till this day and it was a lot better than selling phone cases, with graphics I get to make amazing graphics such as logos, flyers, collages, business cards and other business essentials I provide for all kinds of people. One of the problems I help with clients is their vision, sometimes my clients have ideas they think might not work but that’s where I come in and help them make their ideas work and bring them to life, what sets me apart from other graphic designers is that I’m willing to try new things even things that I don’t provide because not only am I helping them they’re also helping me as we grow together. What I’m most proud of is the growth that I’ve seen for myself and my business because it wasn’t easy and I appreciate every single person who has booked with me and helped me reach my potential and trusting me because if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be the person that I am today but I’m still working towards my goals and bettering myself each and everyday personally and professionally. One of the main things I want potential clients to know about me or my brand is that nothing lasts forever and I love changing things because it goes to show growth and I love being different from others and provide nothing but the best.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me would be social media, in particular Instagram. Because Instagram has always been one of my favorite social media apps where you can grow, gain, and explore whether it’s personal or business and it’s easy to network especially for creatives in different spaces whether you’re a content creator or a graphic designer. Instagram is very helpful and resourceful in a lot of ways for everyone.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
On my creative journey there are a lot of goals on my list but my biggest goal would have to be one day become a successful influential creative in more than one aspect. I hope that my business gets recognized and one get a big client who’s well known and I’ll blow up and gain a lot of clients and notoriety. Not only do I want gain notice for my business I hope to one day become a brand for myself and gain notice that way as well I also want to become a content creator besides doing graphics.
