We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Malik Watson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Malik, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
ZionSunEnergy really focuses on a full home recipe for success. Too often in the industry, companies focus on just a solar power solution. These companies do not fully recognize any of the other factors that contribute to a full home efficiency answer for your home. What do I mean by that? Sure you can put a lot of solar panels (modules) on a roof, but how old are the windows? How old is the AC unit? Some of these questions need to be asked to ensure you’re getting the most out of your Solar system.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started ZionSunEnergy in 2018 in hopes to provide people with utility bill relief, along with helping the environment. Having worked in the industry years before the start of ZSE, I recognized many clients were being sold solar power systems without truly knowing what they were getting into. In one particular situation, a client reached out to me about a system he had purchased. He was interested in upgrading his system. Upon inspecting his system, we realized that the company who sold him his system, installed a cheaper system than he paid for. The system was also not upgradeable. I took the opportunity to be the advocate for this client and contact the company that did the install. Im most proud of not only having his system replaced, but the fact I was able to provide him with the upgrade he wanted. We want our future clients to know that they are getting an honest and detailed assessment of their home, with a team they can trust!
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
Let’s just start with the pandemic was a tough time for a lot of small businesses out there… for ZSE, we went from being very connected and active in communities, to being stuck behind a computer screen! Unable to have that interaction with clients at their homes and businesses, impacted our ability to provide that reassurance to our clientele. Not to mention, some of the preferred solar panels (modules) were very difficult to come by. At that time, there was real consideration to take things in a different direction. Funny enough our existing clients were the ones to provide encouragement to continue on our mission of supplying others with the option of energy independence. We are very appreciative of their support and love!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Early on in my Solar career, I was told “sell as much solar as you can fit on the roof.” This is not the way… Every home or business has a sweet spot where the cost makes sense on the savings side. It’s our job to find that sweet spot, and supply them with a home/business efficiency plan that will benefit them for the life of the system.
