We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Malik Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Malik below.
Hi Malik, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The Winter 2023 Pacsun campaign would have to be the one. For almost 10 whole years, I had been praying and wishing for them to take a chance on me. From the jump, I knew I didn’t have the height for that kind of modeling, as back then that was more of a thing. The industry has been changing though, fortunately. I was always finding something to buy whenever going to ANY Pacsun store, can’t help it. Their clothing has always been so personable. Because they have many different styles, it’s like you can go in there and customize yourself. So for them to take a chance on me many years later was not only a full circle moment, but also a major dream come true. Shoutout to the team at Pacsun!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Minnesota born and raised, I grew up on the east side for a majority of my life. Now, the east side is overlooked a lot because of its bad reputation. However, there are many talented individuals who come from there. I used to make mini movies with my siblings when we were younger. The 3 of us shared a laptop, so I taught myself how to use windows movie maker. I also loved to watch tv and always wanted to be a Disney Channel kid! So I guess it kind of started then. Fast forward to years later, I pursued it and got signed. My agents are always there for me, as well as my acting coach, Leonard Searcy. They all point me in the right direction, and I know they’ve always had my best interest at heart. They’ve taken great care of me. The closest thing to a problem I would say that I solve, is making myself available if a client is interested in booking me. What I think sets me apart from others is my vision that I have, and everyone is different in that sense. This is something I think about and work on daily, so every day I am getting better. Even if just a bit. I am most proud of the list of things I have accomplished. Years ago, I told myself I would get my face in multiple places. I made it happen, and it feels nothing short of great. I am so grateful for everyone that has been there along the way as well. The main thing I want people in general to know about my work, is that it is ultimately to inspire others. A lot of people doubt themselves, when in reality you can do anything you want. It’s all a mindset thing I feel like. The moment I got out of my head about “not being enough”, I started to thrive.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Yes, most definitely. A lot of people think it’s almost impossible or unrealistic to make it in the field that I’m in. It doesn’t “pay the bills”. However, it can be VERY lucrative. There are a countless amount of big names in the film industry that make at least a living. For me, yes I do have another job but I know that when that breakthrough comes, I will be set. It’s very possible. The jobs I get right now as well usually pay very well. It’s just a matter of consistency. The Minnesota market for this field is small in general but still very good, and I plan on branching out to Atlanta and Chicago as well. I can’t let other individuals try to tell me what is and is not unrealistic, nothing can stop me. Don’t let someone or some people tell you what you want to do won’t work out.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I would absolutely love to win an award or two for my work in a feature film or series! I think it’s safe to say it’s something I imagine daily. I want my work to inspire other people to really just go for it. The more I picture it, the easier it gets to envision. I even picture myself giving the speech sometimes. I know I can do it, and in due time I know that I will. At the rate I’m going and with God on my side, there’s no way I can lose.
