We were lucky to catch up with Malia Carvalho recently and have shared our conversation below.
Malia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
My journey to becoming The Kundalini Coach is a story of my own challenges, dreams, mistakes, growth, studies and visions!. Like many creative types, I have always had many interests, finding it simply impossible to narrow it all down and choose ONE venture to focus on. It is a trait that certainly has held me back and distracted me at times. When one has so many interests, how does one choose what to focus on? When all of these ideas are floating around in the busy, active mind, it is easy to throw up the arms and become frozen amongst too many options. THIS is where the very practice I teach comes in to save the day!
Kundalini yoga is a scientifically proven discipline that improves memory, focus, helps curb anxiety and helps bring the practitioner from that busy monkey mind to the present, non-reactive, non-reaching receptive mind where creativity can blossom from a much more grounded place. In a very short time through a combination of breath work, intentional movement, meditation, mantra, movement and sound, the practitioner may be brought from a state of overwhelm to a state of thoughtful presence. The nervous system is balanced, there is more flow in the digestive system, there is more blood flow to the brain and there is a sense of grounded confidence that develops. And these are only the practical, physical benefits Kundalini yoga provides. Many practitioners report a stronger connection to their guides, whether that means their family lineage, their visions, universal energy or God.
By developing my own morning practice and lifestyle of Kundalini yoga, I was able to become inspired to combine all of my modalities into one powerful offering. I coach women in becoming powerfully embodied through somatic coaching and Kundalini yoga and create stunning goddess retreat experiences while combining all of my various loves and strengths doing this work!

Malia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My focus in college was art history and graphic design and I have always had a passion for making spaces beautiful, including my healing home where I work with local clients and groups. My educational background and experience also includes massage therapy, yoga teacher training, a yoga psychology program called Yoga Psyche Soul by Ashley Turner, LMFT, a psychedelic integration and addiction and recovery coaching certificate through Being True to You, a 6 year mentorship in plant medicine ceremony facilitation with my own work with plant medicine beginning in 2016 and many years learning music and writing and singing. I am currently enrolled in a year long somatic coaching and embodied yoga program with the pioneer of online yoga Brett Larkin! It is very important to me to keep growing and learning.
I feel grateful to be able to weave all of these modalities and interests together and I feel most fulfilled when I am planning and holding my kundalini goddess retreats. With all of my passion, heart and intention, I create beautiful spaces for deep healing and women to come together to unravel and connect as their most authentic selves. The journey doesn’t end when they leave! Through my online program The Kundalini Connection, they are able to continue their daily practice at home and also receive one on one guidance for accountability, support and more focused growth.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele is real human genuine connection and interaction! In this day and age starting online is super helpful – joining local Facebook groups where you can actually meet with people in real life is a fun and organic way to grow. If you are genuinely there to make real connections, ask questions and be a part of the community, you will in no time have friends, grow your community and both support others and have others want to support you as well! It feels good to give and receive in this way. lol

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yes! I really owe it to Amber Hagberg of Sold Out Retreats for guiding me on how to sell out my retreats in an authentic, connected, down to earth way. Many of us in the healing arts and creative realm think of “selling” as a dirty word and since we absolutely love what we do and wish everyone to experience the deep transformation we have experienced ourselves along the way, we often feel uncomfortable with the monetary exchange part of the equation!
I have learned in order for me to provide the highest quality experience, giving all the energy I wish to give to these experiences and people, I must respect my own time and resources and receive back what I put out! I will always make my experiences as accessible as I can with payment plans available and not over charge for my time, as I also respect the time and energy of my seekers.
