Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maleah Staton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maleah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
One of my favorite things about what I do as a virtual Dietitian is that advice for one client may be terrible/not applicable for another.
That being said, one aspect of guidance that does seem to work for every mom I work with, is that you cannot be successful in your weight loss/muscle mommy/health and wellness goals if you are not willing to be a little selfish in some way. And how cool is it that in doing so, you teach your children that taking care of your body is something that we do as humans? Then our children learn how to take care of themselves…literally changing generations of health moving forward!
No matter my clients goals, when they are reminded that they have to be a little selfish..and that is NOT a bad thing…they can realign their actions with said goals and feel excited about taking steps towards them!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Even before I became a Registered Dietitian I have worked with moms and kids, and with athletes. I worked with hundreds of women to support them in reaching their aesthetic goals in a realistic way, then when I became a mom myself, I realized that moms were NOT receiving the support that actually made sense to motherhood.
I love to work with moms who are READY to put themselves first, who want to look and feel strong AF, and who want to make long term changes. I provide weekly zoom calls to these mamas where we cover the nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress that is unique to their situation and goals, and then we create action steps to educate them LONG TERM! Our work is collaborative and educational – meaning no cookie cutter diet plans and being realistic about what changes you can/want to make!
When my mamas realize that in starting where they are at and making sustainable changes, that is where the magic happens!
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would ALWAYS work with moms! Realizing that we as mothers are not getting support that is designed for motherhood means that we are not helping our children to take care of themselves most optimally. Being able to change future generations for the better is everything to me. Being able to support moms in being (and raising) humans who are educated and empowered with their health and wellness choices is SO COOL!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Part of how I got to be the Dietitian I am today, meant I had to unlearn a LOT of disordered eating and emotional patterns, and diet culture. I grew up as an athlete (swimming, musical theatre, dance, gymnastics), and somehow along the way I learned to take my emotions out on my food. Using therapy and a lot of internal work helped me to re learn healthy emotional coping strategies, and from a nutrition standpoint, I had to unlearn this insane idea of “eating 1200 calories long term being healthy”
I finally made the change when I realized I lost my cycle due to undereating and over exercising, and it took years of self work with a dietitian, therapist and myself to make it happen! Being on the other side of it now (having eaten in a caloric surplus since early 2022 between pregnancies and breastfeeding) I am SO GRATEFUL I made the effort for myself and have a positive relationship with food!
