We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Malcolm Savage a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Malcolm, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The name for Savage Series 8 is defined as “To be a Savage you got to be FIERCE and to be FIERCE you got to have Courage.” The number 8 represents the eight of us in my family: (3 brothers, 3 sisters, and my mother and father). Also, the “8” representing the infinity sign because we embrace the existence of everyone to continue to keep their courage throughout their lives. We represent confidence, quality and community.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Malcolm Savage and born and raised in North Philadelphia. I attended the Charter H.S. for Architecture & Design. After H.S. I attended college at CSJ out Rutland, VT and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Accounting. After graduating from college, I got a job BNY Mellon as a customer service representative. After working there for a year, I realize that it was not for me and I wanted to start a business. I want the people who purchase our products to resonate with our mission because I feel as though everyone needs confidence in everyday living. So we wearing the brand and knowing what it stands for, that can help each individual be able to navigate through their journey.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The one lesson I had to unlearn was that business is not all about making money if it is your passion. When I realize that, I focused more on the foundation of Savageseries8 and it led me to create a structure of systems that will make the brand be relevant for 50 plus years. Also, people that support the brand wants to see the brand grow because they understand our mission. We kept in mind building a community that resonates with that mission of confidence, quality and community it will lead to the brand being here to impact other people lives.

Any advice for managing a team?
The advice I have for managing a team is communication, understanding and trust. The reason for communication is because for each team member to know their roles/responsibilities to be able to achieve the task for what needs to be done. The reason for understanding is because, yes I’m the owner/founder, receiving feedback from your team can be helpful in moments. Also, that shows as a leader you are open to ideas that can possibly help the situation/project. Lastly trust, having people you can trust goes a long way because I don’t have to do everything in my company and that I can have my team members get the job done if I’m not able to get it done.
