We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Malcolm Chavis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Malcolm thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I mean when I think of the word mission I think of work to be completed. I think of what I can do in this lifetime to better others not just myself right. I think of the higher power and what my due diligence would be to spread his knowledge and power. The story behind my mission is God. Let as many people know who does it for me each and every day. Upon waking up sharing inspirational stories to spreading a positive message to encourage others. I want people to feel empowered in whatever it is they put their mind too. The story behind my mission is faith. It takes just a small amount and we can all see our wildest dreams come true. My mission is to spread God’s love through hope and positivity.

Malcolm, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into acting as a freshman in college. I go into my first backstage production called our town where I was grateful enough to also make an appearance in the play. From there my interest peaked and I started taking acting workshops outside of school. I felt that I had a skill for it, and the rest was history. Upon graduating college I enrolled in a program in New York which landed me my management and team. Since then I have gone to work on multiple commercials, television shows, and movies.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
So the lesson I had to unlearn was being ungrateful for “smaller” opportunities. So when we get into the word smaller we think it’s beneath us right or we shouldn’t have to do a certain thing anymore once we think we have enough reps. This was huge for me. I had to get out of the mindset that there was work out there that was beneath me or that I was too good to turn down. To begin with it’s very distasteful, it potentially hurts others feelings making them feel inadequate. Through the years I learned that anything I could be a part of is a journey it teaches you patience it shows respect and it also gives you practice. Why turn anything down to further yourself essentially?

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a point in time where I felt like I wasn’t getting the most from the people who I was being represented by. It really got under my skin because I was working so hard for myself and felt as if they weren’t necessarily doing the same for me. So I had to write up a email and explain myself. This went on for quite some time, I would voice my wants and needs and they would be ignored. So I was fed up and I terminated the relationship with my old team. So many people deemed me crazy because of no other management or agency to fall back on but I trusted the process. I came into contact with a colleague from school we started to chat about his acting coach. I got in touch with him we worked on material for a few months and I was presented to a manager he thought would be a good fit. Ever since I made the switch I have doubled the amount of opportunities Ive received the volume has skyrocketed I couldn’t be more thankful for the switch it was LIFE changing.
