We were lucky to catch up with Malasurfcartel. recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Malasurfcartel., thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Probably my projects Ella Lee and SINA. They have backstories to them as far as why I made them. There was a reason and intent. Almost like an outlet for me emotionally with the situations of those times that I was living and going through. Ella lee was made coming from a successful local band that did not work out and figuring out how to do it on my own. SINA. was continuing that journey and finding my sonic identity even more, while being inspired with everything that happened in my personal life in 2022. It’s almost like a diary in a way cause I can listen to those projects and remember every situation and place I was at during the creative process for those projects. But yea artistically, those projects are the most meaningful for me at the moment.

Malasurfcartel., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a producer/musician from Houston, TX. My family is from South America. Peru to be exact. My life has really been living in Peru and living in Houston. I’ve been playing guitar since I was a teenager and learning recording softwares since late high school/college. I didn’t take it seriously until I was around 21 years old and I started to play live around then too. I think the main thing that separates me from other producers is that I treat it like art. Every sound in a song for me is a different paint brush. What drives me to make these songs is the situations that happen in my life. I want to create feelings, emotions and situations from sound. I want people to hear something of mine and have it trigger an emotion or remind them of something they have been through before. It’s a serious craft for me and I’m still learning and growing with it.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Understand that what creatives do is essential for human life just as any other ordinary job. Art is essential for the human spirit. Just as engineering is essential for how we live in this world. The creators of this time need to be supported. All the art in the world that has some meaning can change and help the lives of people living right now. Inspire and help others. Spread your local artists work around to others. The impact it can have on people and even help others that are going through something.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Mastery by Robert Greene. I believe every creative who takes their work seriously should have that one in their library. It’s mainly a bible to become a master of your craft. I always reread it multiple times throughout the year.
