Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Malachy Poinan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, Malachy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?

The whole story behind our brand basically boils down to the things that happen in your life that shape the decision you make and the direction your life goes. For example not growing up in a the best neighborhood you could use that as motivation to succeed and make it out of that situation and be better than that or you can become a product of your environment

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I’ve always been into fashion so I feel like the natural progression typically is to want to make your own clothes at some point but my friend Cooper is really the one who wanted to go full on with the brand so we’ve been working for a few years on a bunch of different ideas for brands trying different things out. We make 1 of 1 pieces made from second hand or vintage clothing so I’m proud that we are a pretty sustainable company. So many clothes get thrown away every year and even more that get produced. Something I’d like people to know is no matter how simple the piece is there’s a lot more work that goes into in than just putting the design on the piece. And that goes for a lot of designers. There’s easily a few hours that go into every piece. Researching or thinking of the design, creating it, getting the Dennisons right, actually sourcing the piece. The list can go on and on

How’d you meet your business partner?

I have two. They’re both my two closest friends. The first is Cooper. I met him in high school my sophomore year he always dressed really cool and took cool pictures and one day we got to talking in the lunch line and we decided to take pictures one day and have been best friends ever since he’s really helped me in a lot of ways it would take too many words to even say anything. My other partner is Colton. I also met him in high school but he lived a few houses down from me and we were always into similar music and clothes and shoes so we were always hanging out but he moved out of the neighborhood and schools so we disconnected for a little bit but in the past year we’ve picked up right where we left off and he got added to the team

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

We all just work a lot close to 40 if not more hours a week. Cooper and I both work at restaurants and Colton works on the navy base. So we all put aside some money and get the equipment we need. We basically all finish our shifts at our day job then come home and grind out what we need to. We have three of us paying for things which cuts costs greatly but it’s definitely still not cheap
