We recently connected with Malachite Saaquya and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Malachite, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Hahah, y’all might not all agree but I think my parents are truly wonderful. They never rushed me one bit. Even if I wish they had encouraged me to make more choices and faster progress, I have to be thankful for the space they created so that I could be the one to empower myself. At the end of the day I know they will love me no matter what I do and that allows me to make sure that I am making the decisions just for me. Building my own dreams, not someone else’s. It’s so many times in life that you win the game before realizing you don’t enjoy playing it.
Malachite, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a film actor who’s also about to start a rap career at age thirty one. I’ve not done a ton as an artist yet but I have seriously put the work in to develop myself creatively. I’m actually really thankful to be just catching my stride creatively at this point in life. I am someone who never considered being an artist till their 20s. At that point I developed a serious interest in films which led me to deeply admire filmmaking. This is genuinely thanks to my best friend for just showing me all the greats. Anyways I realized that I want to create art but I am pretty weird or “unique” if you will. I was literally raised in the woods and don’t have the best social skills. So I had taken on acting in part just to help me get better at connecting to people. It’s pretty much the same with me starting to rap now. I want to share my emotions more freely and connect with people in a way that I find hard in casual daily conversations. Les go = )
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me art is all about being vulnerable and getting to express myself authentically. I feel that it’s a profound gift to be able to do this at all. My hope beyond that is always that my creative viewpoint will be something that helps other people and allows me to connect with the world.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Oh gosh like every other day honestly. Consistency is important if you want to make progress but don’t ever be afraid to reinvent yourself.
