We were lucky to catch up with Malachi Wright recently and have shared our conversation below.
Malachi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea of Wright Graphics started my junior year of college. I had a passion for art & my major was in Digital Design. I knew I wanted to do something in my field of course professionally. At first I wanted to design my own characters that I started back in high school & their story lines but in my second semester of my junior year, I started to design flyers and a few logos for my friends.
The start of my senior year, I really started to get into designing flyers a lot more. I eventually became the Graphic Designer for my school’s Student Government Association. All the flyers I designed my senior year were for free. I really just wanted to build up my portfolio for when I graduated. During that time, I was able to help design flyers for my peers that needed them for campaigns, parties, etc. Even though I did not graduate at my “scheduled” time, I started planning out my business Wright Graphics that summer & graduated from Claflin University Fall of 2022.
After I graduated, I already had my plans to launch my business in February of 2023. I reached out and got some great advice from my friend who had started her own graphic design business on campus, Daa’yiah Fogle & she was a big help for the things I know now. After I launched my business on February 1st, everything else was history.
Malachi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Malachi Wright & I am a recent fall graduate from the Illustrious Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC. I am a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. I was born and raised in Columbia, SC where I graduated from Lower Richland High School. I am the middle child (a younger brother & a older sister). Growing up, I dealt with having eczema, asthma & numerous food allergies. Though I still deal with all 3 of them today, they are not as potent as they used to be.
I got into graphic design my junior year of college and wanted to start my own business one day after graduating. My business Wright Graphics is a graphic design business where my slogan is Designing visions to last a LIFETIME. My primary goal is to provide my clients with high quality service & to deliver them their vision so it will last a lifetime for whichever field they are apart of. The software I use to design my client’s visions are Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator & on occasions Canva.
The problems that I solve for my clients is that I listen to what their vision is & put myself in their shoes. That way I can see their viewpoint to get a better picture. I solve their need of designing something that will stand out from their competitors in their respective field but also make a statement as well. One of the things that I am most proud of is being able to see & hear the reaction from my clients once they see their vision come to life. That gives me that energy to keep going & that I am doing great work for people.
One thing that I want potential clients to know when it comes to my services is that you will be treated with the upmost respect and that your vision will become my vision so that you will be satisfied with the end result.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
The way I keep in touch with my clients and build that loyalty is by reaching out to them to check up on them like how I would if I was checking up on one of my friends. Just asking them how they are doing starts to build a bond that you actually care about them. I would then ask them how their business is going & did they get any reviews from there logo design or things of that nature.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think the thing that helped build my reputation so far in the graphic design field is that I was already designing things before I graduated from college & that I was known for multiple things (I had a driving service on campus, overall being a genuine person anybody could talk to, being known through my fraternity, things like that).
I would always provide great service when it came to helping people out with different things so when I launched my business, I already had a good reshare & support system to the point I did not have to reach out to people if they needed graphic design needs, they would reach out to me for their services. Forever grateful for that.
